Hoover DM 4494 Upright Bagless

Advantages: inexpensive and has great suction
Disadvantages: fiddly to use, clogs up easily

...Firstly, why did I buy this cleaner? We've had three Dysons over the past six years or so - they keep breaking down. Now, I really must explain that this is nothing to do with an overly dirty house! Given repair costs etc we have rarely had them fixed. When the last Dyson we had broke down we decided that forking out £250+ every other year or so was daft, and so we decided to try another brand. We wanted: Good suction Good design with edge tool, etc Bagless Reasonably lightweight My wife prefers uprights Stair cleaning facility Low cost - initially and ongoing, in terms of lifelong washable filters Not much then? We looked all over the place and ended up in Curry's! While there, a chap saw us looking at the DM4523 and took the time to tell us that he had one, and that it was the best vacuum he had ever owned. Advantages: Extra long stair hose.
Disadvantages: Short flex.

...This hoover looks great but Im a little disappointed with it. The flex is shorter than an old hoover model that broke down after 11yrs of service. The handle seems shorter. Also you can't feel the suction from the front of the cleaner, I know im comparing it with the old model but I can't help it. The tools are in an inconvenient place at the back of the hoover because it make's it difficult to reattach the hose after stair cleaning. ( They get in the way). The bagless cassette you empty is small and for a larger house needs emptying at least twice. I have a black lab and we get alot of dog hair's i found it annoying not only emptying the cassette but also the pull out filter as it got clogged up with dog hair's , I accidently sucked up a grape and found that in the filter and not in the cassette , so watch you don't hoover up... Advantages: Great attachments, good suction, can hoover the stairs just using the hose.
Disadvantages: Doesn't hold much dust, noisy.

...for some advice and all she said was that the wattage doesn't need to be as high on an upright as a cylinder but still makes a difference and recommended I steer clear of a Dyson as they are not as good in her opinion as they are meant to be. (Just so you know a month ago my Mum bought a Dyson! I know that is exactly what I thought!) I decided on an upright, as it would be better for my back. Yes I suffer like my other halfs Mum, they do say men go for someone like their own mother! I tore a muscle years ago and it still gives me hassle now so the less I aggravate it the better. I decided I wanted above 1800 watts and that it should have a reasonably long hose so I don't have to carry the vacuum itself while I vacuum the stairs. Rather a long list of must haves really.
