We have a young dog, who, when he was first brought home, would not go outside to toilet. Although we cleaned up after him each time, the carpet obviously wasn't as clean as it could be. When he was fully house trained, I decided it was time to clean the carpet properly. It would also be useful to have a carpet cleaner to give the carpets a clean every six months or so, especially with the dog bringing soil in from the garden, and half the local river home after a walk!
There son't seem to be many products in this category. I was told to get a dedicated cleaner, rather than a 3-in-1 type, as they were better at the job. I was also told that the Bissel cleaners were not the best build quality, and often had parts falling off them.
The Hoover Brush 'n Wash came highly recommended, especially by other pet owners. So I jointly purchased one with my Mum and Dad.
When it arrived, I tried it out on the above mentioned carpet. Some assembly was required, but that was straightforward enough. I then filled the clean water tank with warm water and detergent and set to work. I suppose the hardest part was moving all the furniture to be able to clean the whole carpet!
There is a trigger on the handle which controls whether the clean water is dispensed, or whether it is just sucking it back up. A couple of fairly slow passes over each bit of carpet did the trick. I had enough water in the tank for this one carpet, which is about 10' by 8'. I found that it was quite heavy to manoeuvre, particulary when filled with water.
Then I emptied the dirty water tank. I wasn't prepared for how filthy the water was going to be! It was disgusting!!! I had to rinse the tank out with more water to get it clean.
I left the carpet over night to allow it to dry out. It had a nice smell to it and seemed to bring out the pile of the carpet.
I will certainly be doing the rest of the house - as soon as I get round to moving the furniture out of the way.
One other aside: you are supplied with a bottle of the detergent, which will do three tanks of water. I haven't yet found anyone who sells additional bottles. And I have been told by a friend that no other brand compares to
Hoover's own.
