I think my household is cursed in regards to vacuum cleaners; we've had 3 or 4 in the last few years (a Dyson, Electrolux, Hinari), all exiting due to breaking down and needing heavy cash to resurrect them.
So, this time we went back to a brand we hadn't tried since we last had a bagged upright cleaner - the classic Hoover.
The TC1184ALY in this instance is a bagless cylinder vacuum cleaner that until fairly recently cost at least £119.99. When we purchased it from Dixons online it was marked down to half
price. And to prove this isn't a fraud there are cached pages on Google which list this at the original price elsewhere.
Price aside, the thing that was most striking was the attractive look of the unit. The alloy style wheels beneath the compact, light (6.2kg), sports car blue frame make this look like a cleaner Lewis Hamilton would use!
Compared to our 1700w
Hinari lifestyle cleaner, this 1800w (240 air watts) unit is much lighter to carry and manoeuvre, even with it's metal telescopic arm (2.5 metre hose reach). It also takes up slightly less space in storage.
The first thing that strikes you as a draw back is the mere 2 litre dust collector which we find we need to empty daily. But we learned that the coffee jug style bottom opening makes emptying
quick and easy, so it's not a problem. In fact the ease of cleaning it daily means we can keep it well maintained.
Dyson may proclaim the first bagless cleaner and more patents on latest models, but their prices have also risen and those new things don't really add much essentials. This thing picks up as good as an original Dyson. It's also much quieter than all cleaners we've had up to now. It's not silent but it doesn't fill a room with Grand Prix noise.
Despite the inclusion of a picture guide sheet, the way things are laid out is typical to cylinder cleaners, so you know where the power button and cord rewind is (5.2 metres), how to open it and are ready to go.
The brush attachment stores on the underside of the cleaner while the allergen remover doesn't. I find it neat that the tools don't stack on the handle where I find they're always prone to falling off.
The HEPA filter is also washable, which is just nice to know for the pocket.
We've not had this
Hoover for long. But I think brand reliability aside, this cleaner feels and behaves in a sturdy manner that I think - and hope - will last us for more than a year. Vacs don't seem to be what they used to, but while this model trickles away from retailer shelves it's worth considering if you need a replacement. Comes with a 1yr
manufacturer's guarantee.
