kids to read. Here, as in most of his extensive body of work, Dr. Seuss creates uncomplicated, monosyllabic rhymes to foster learning and inspire children to read. But what was radical about this little book at the time of publication (and what makes it still compelling today) is Seuss's departure from the traditionally dull pictures and sentences used in reading primers. In contrast, the illustrations here are wild and wonderful, and the accompanying language, while simple, is delightfully silly. For example, the rhyme "THREE TREE / Three fish in a tree / Fish in a tree? / How can that be?" is brought to life with a trio of plump, self-satisfied fish perched atop globular branches as two stymied hybrid dog-rabbit-humanoids look on in consternation.Hop on Popdoes much more than teach children the basics of word construction, it also introduces them to the incomparable pleasure of reading a book. Advantages: fun tongue twisting rhymes Disadvantages: having your 3 year old in stitches when you can't say them correctly
...same time I requested that Hop on Pop could be added as this is my favourite Dr Seuss book.
I gave quite a bit of background knowledge in my other Seuss review on the man himself so I won't go over it again and if you are interested in his beginnings then you can have a look at the ABC review. Instead I will just get straight on with the joys of this particular book.
As I mentioned this is my favourite Seuss book and this is for 3 reasons:-
Great ... ...to hop.
We like to hop on top of Pop.
STOP
You must not
hop on Pop.
The look on Pop's face in the book is exactly like my bloke's when our son has his fun and the disappointed look on my son's face looks just like the children in the book as they are told off by their father.
The book ends with another favourite of my son's which he likes us to read as fast as possible and this is the bit we tend to get wrong which he finds so hilarious for ...

Advantages: Interactive story that you'll read again and again Disadvantages: Get ready for lots of rhymming :)
...great, you start of with Hop on Pop (And great pictures of them hopping on pop - get ready for your toddler to jump on you though!!) My daughter started rhymming other words great for early vocabulary although some of the words were top, bop, mop, others were zop, dop, kop - budding Dr seuss in the making!! Each time you read the book it is interactive in that you can change the story add movement (trying to walk/crawl like the characters, and so ...

In this story the Grinch wants to steal Christmas from Whoville. Eventually he learns his lesson and his heart grows three times bigger.
~Oh, The Places You'll Go!~
Dr. Seuss, with his amazing illustrations and uplifting rhymes, is convinced ("98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed") that success is on its way. So long as you remember "to be dexterous and deft. And NEVER mix up your right foot with your left," ...
~Hop on Pop~

~Scrambled Eggs Super~

Advantages: Lovely story for the very young Disadvantages: none
...arrives who is totally unaware of the adventure her newborn has just undertaken.
This story is lovely to read with a young child and with the clever repetition it isn't long before he or she will be reading alongside you. The illustrations are simple but tell the story as well as the words that accompany them. One of my favourites is the look on the bird's face as he realises he is falling downwards out of the tree. He is so obviously unaware of what a big drop means and by the fact that he is unable to fly.
My 3 year old loves this book and it is always a favourite bedtime read, along with the DrSeuss books that we have in this beginner books series such as Hop on Pop amongst others. He loves to recite it with me and knows most of it off by heart already. He also gets quite animated when the egg jumps in the nest and the mother...

Advantages: Rhyming book that helps children learn to read Disadvantages: none
...In The Hat and Hop On Pop but this one seems to have managed to escape our shelves. It wasn't surprising therefore when my son grabbed it from the shelf in the local library and brought it over to me, as he already loves the strange and funny rhymes in the DrSeuss books.
The style of rhyming in the book is just pure genius and I don't think there has been anything quite like this since it was written all those years ago. The thought of eating green eggs and ham is not exactly appealing to anyone and in fairness I would probably be quite worried about all sorts of food poisoning if that was served up to me, but the point of this silly book is to show children that they might actually like something if they just give it a try and stop being so stubborn.
Books like these were well ahead of their time when it comes to things like phonics...

This charming book introduces young children to words that rhyme, such as Hop and Pop, Cup and Pup, Mouse and House, Tall and Small. And once they have learned to recognize one word, children soon find to their delight they can read another simply by changing the first letter. With his unique combination of hilarious stories, zany pictures and riotous rhymes, Dr. Seuss has been delighting young children and helping them learn to read for over fifty years. Creator of the wonderfully anarchic Cat in the Hat, and ranked among the UK's top ten favourite children's authors, Seuss is firmly established as a global best-seller, with nearly half a billion books sold worldwide. As the first step in a major rebrand programme, HarperCollins is relaunching 17 of Dr. Seuss's best-selling books, including such perennial favourites as The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham and Fox in Socks. In response to consumer demand, the bright new cover designs incorporate much needed guidance on reading levels, with the standard paperbacks divided into three reading strands - Blue Back Books for parents to share with young children, Green Back Books for budding readers to tackle on their own, and Yellow Back Books for older, more fluent readers to enjoy. Hop on Pop belongs to the Blue Back Book range.
