A bit about earwax -------------------------- Glands in the ear canal secrete a substance called Cerumen, which helps to cleanse the ear of debris and dirt. This collects as wax, and tiny hairs in the ear remove it without our help or without us noticing. Earwax is important as it protects the ear from infection.
Why would I need to use Hopi ear candles? ----------------------------------------------------------- Problems with your ears can occur when there is a build-up of too much earwax. Most people tend to stick a cotton bud down them to clear them, however this usually pushes the wax further down into the auditory canal where it can become compacted. When it gets like this it is unlikely to escape naturally and if left for a long period it may harden, causing blocked ears, earache, reduced/dull hearing, itching, ear & head noises. Sometimes, pain from the pressure of wax on the lining of the ear canal, which becomes swollen, makes the blocking sensation worse.

What the bloody hell is it? ---------------------------------- The Hopi candle is not a candle as such but its a hollow tube made out of cotton flax, to stiffen the flax they are impregnated with herb oils whose healing properties have been known to the Hopi Tribe for hundreds of years.

Ok its D-day wish me luck I’ll let you know what happens when I get back!
My experience ----------------------- The therapist has recommended a couple of sessions for me depending on how bad the problem is. Each session costs 20.00.
First of all the therapist asked me some questions about my ailments, including whether or not I’ve ever had a burst ear drum as its not advised to perform the treatment in this case. Even though the treatment is very gentle its not advised to mess about with your ears, as they are so sensitive. After a quick chat she got me to lie on the couch on my side, she showed me the candle and explained that each ear would take about 9-15 minutes to do, she will stop when the flame has reached a red line about three quarters of the way down. The heat from the flame and the combination of the oils will soften the wax and make it easier for it to be released. She inserted the lit candle into my ear and held her hand around it to keep it in place. I heard a sizzling noise like a sparkler and occasionally the odd puff of air, which is the wax moving. After about 10mins she took out the candle and blew it out, she massaged the area and then asked me to turn over I was now on my right side and as she resumed the treatment with another candle I heard much louder noises almost like pops of air, this she explained meant that this ear was worse than the other. After about 15 minutes this time she took out the candle and asked me to lie on my back, where she finished me off with a pressure point massage on my face to drain my sinuses.
I found i felt very relaxed throughout the treatment and very light afterwards. The smell during the treatment was lovely; it smelt like burning honey, obviously due to the bee’s wax in the candle.
Now this is the fun bit, afterwards she asked if I would like to see what came out of my ears urgh!! But I was intrigued so she unwrapped the candle and inside is a filter with yellow stuff above it, this is the bees wax and other herbs within this there should be bits of wax if it worked. Now in my left ear there were a few dots of brown wax and a slight residue around the candle top, these means there is probably more wax to come out, urgh again!! Now in my right ear there were three big gross balls of wax followed by little specks, so this meant that this ear was definitely the worser of the two urgh urgh urgh!!!!
After the treatment ------------------------- The therapist said I might feel a slight discomfort around my ears and sinuses afterwards and maybe the next day as well however this is fine all it means is that the wax is loosening. She also advised not to submerge my head in water for 24 hours i.e.; don’t stick my head under when in the bath. Also she asked me to drink plenty of water to flush out the toxins aswith all holistic treatments.
So does It work? ------------------- I feel great my ears ache slightly but I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my sinuses and my ears feel like she’s took my brain out and you could see straight through them! I certainly feel clearer in my head and not so claggy, I’ve booked in for 3 weeks time and she said that every other week would be fine to clear out any remaining wax and then after that when ever I felt it necessary, it’s a wonderfully relaxing treatment anyway so I might treat myself once a month. I’m definitely going back to see what else comes out of my ears!! I’ve include some extra info and precautions below for anyone who is interested in the treatment.
Where can I get it done? ----------------------------- A lot of beauty salons offer this service, especially ones who specialise in holistic therapies, my advice is to ring a few up or ask around.
Warnings/other info. ---------------------------- It is a safe treatment for children. Any treatments for ear problems should only be done by a qualified Therapist. If you have any Inflammation/Infection then treatment should not be carried out. If you have perforated eardrums then treatment can be given but at your own risk.

We have tried two different kinds of earcandles and the ones I am reviewing today are the Original Biosun Hopi & Aroma EarCandles which I bought from Holland and Barrett for £7.99 for the pair (one for each ear!). These are slightly cheaper if bought in bulk via the Internet but obviously we just wanted to get one pair to make sure that they worked before we bought any more.
The earcandles are about 9 inches in length and are tubes of about a quarter of an inch in diameter and are sold contained in a long plastic bag sealed at the top. Full instructions are included.

The whole concept of earcandles was a new one for me. I used to walk quickly past my local Chinese medicine centre, with its strange photos of people with lighted candles in their ears, thinking that this was the strangest and most unnatural thing I had ever seen!
My 14 year old son complained about constant ringing in his ears at the same time as I read a review of the Hopiearcandle - and I decided to give earcandling a go!
For some reason I was a bit embarrassed when I went into my local Holland and Barrett to ask for the candles - but the reaction of the sales assistant took me by surprise. "Fantastic", she said - "very popular" - "not at all weird". She recommended that I unravel the remnants of the candle once I had used it to look at the wax that had collected inside. Yeuk!
