The Horrid Henry collection of stories is currently the subject of 17 books written for children aged between 6 and 11. The author of these books is Francesca Simon and the subject for the stories, a boy called Henry. As you can probably guess from the title of the collection Henry is a horrid child whereas his brother Peter is perfect. Henry's mum and dad sincerely wish that Henry was like Peter but we don't because then there wouldn't be any fantastic antics from Simon to right her books about.
Horrid Henry's Haunted House is book number 6 and was published in 1998. The book contains four stories entitled, Horrid Henry and the Comfy Black Chair, Horrid Henry's Haunted House, Horrid Henry's School Fair and Horrid Henry Minds his Manners.
Each story is roughly 20 pages in length and so is more than manageable for children. The stories are also interspersed with some fabulous illustrations by Tony Ross, which help to engage children even further.
Now each story gives the reader another insight into the horrible antics that Henry gets up to during his day-to-day life. To give you a bit more information about each of the four stories I have written a synopsis for each. Please note that these synopses are short but that is simply because so are the stories and therefore writing too much would give the entire story away.
**Horrid Henry and the Comfy Black Chair** For Henry Saturday's are the best day of the week - no homework and a day of TV heaven. Flinging himself out of bed he could already imagine stretching out in the comfy black chair and watch all his favourite shows. When he gets down the stairs however Peter is already sat in the chair and the same thing keeps happening. One way or another Henry must gain control of the comfy black chair and therefore gain control of the zapper.
**Horrid Henry's Haunted House** Henry does not under any circumstances want to stay at his cousin Steve's but Mum and Dad have other ideas. Arriving at the house Steve takes Henry upstairs where he tells him that he cannot play with any of his toys. To make matters worse he tells Henry that the room he is staying in is haunted. Although he pretends to be brave Henry cannot help being scared but can he do anything to get his own back?
**Horrid Henry's School Fair** It's school fair time again and Mum is requesting Henry and Peter hand over their donations. As usual Henry is reluctant but when he remembers the unwanted doll his Aunt Greta bought him thinking he was a girl he heads off into the spare room where mum is storing all the donated items. It is here that he spots the school fair's treasure map and begins to plot exactly how he can win the main prize.
**Horrid Henry Minds his Manners** When Henry gets invited to star on his favourite show his achievement is somewhat swallowed by the fact that Peter is also invited to appear on his favourite show. Reluctantly mum and dad agree that both boys can appear on their shows but a mix-up leaves Henry stuck on Manners with Maggie and Peter on Gross-Out. What on earth are they going to do?
My favourite story out of the four has to be Horrid Henry and the Comfy Black Chair just because I love the idea of someone wanting to watch their programmes on the Tv so much that they will go to all lengths to be able to do so.
I would highly recommend these stories to all children within the target age range. They are simple yet entertaining reads and are sure to capture the imaginations of all that read them.
