After reading just about every one we own, Kaitlin comes home from school like a panting dog, saying that through the schools book club there was a new Horrid Henry book we had yet to buy, this time not a storybook but a joke book.

My son is not quite old enough to sit and listen to the hundreds of Horrid Henry books we seem to have accumulated, but my daughter is!
After reading just about every one we own, Kaitlin comes home from school like a panting dog, saying that through the schools book club there was a new Horrid Henry book we had yet to buy, this time not a storybook but a joke book.

The book and characters enclosed were the brain child of Francesca Simon and illustrated by Tony Ross.
The book starts with a short insert from Horrid Henry stating that all his classmates are “a bunch of copycats”, with the premise of the book being written due to the fact that Henry’s teacher, Miss Battle-axe, had set a class competition, that whoever entered the best joke would receive a “really, really great prize”, he then goes onto slag off his arch nemesis “Moody Margaret” from next door, then finally has fight with his younger brother “Perfect Peter”, or as Henry refers to him, the worm!
Each chapter is based around the jokes that each character from the books might tell, this not only gives your child, the reader, some new jokes to tell, but gives you a little insight into the characters personality. Each child also has a nickname at the begging of their name, this again is very useful when it comes to reading any of these books, when there is a book that has a huge amount of characters that might only be used once in a story, it is nice to have a silly nickname as the child seems to remember the characters much easier, without the author having to retell their particular story, or at least explain who they are!
The book is split into 20 chapters, and has joke offerings from every child character featured within the series, they of course mirror the image of the particular child, and example being -
“How do you make an witch, itch?………Take away the W!”
This one of Perfect Peters jokes, and they all instil a feeling of being slightly more babyish than the jokes from Henry’s section.
“Where do pirates hate to be kicked?……..In the ARRRsse!”
This of course is one of Horrid Henry’s jokes, these seem to be much more ruder and violent than anyone else’s!
Each section contains around 15 jokes, with the section having a small introductory piece of text about each character, Beefy Bert being notoriously thick, and his answer to any question asked of him being “Er….I dunno”, though he does manage to remember some of the punch lines to the end jokes!
This is a lovely book, that my daughter has yet to grow tired of reading, the fact that there are obviously more of these books to come is apparent at the back of the book, with there being a section and address to send your own jokes to for use in future publications, with the majority of the jokes in the books being sent from the children that attend Avondale park primary school and high ham school, a fact that is mentioned at the beginning of the book.
Pricewise this available from www.amazon.co.uk for around £5.00 new, second hand I would imagine it would cost you mere pennies!
