A shining example of a stonking good film
Review of The Shining DVD by sunmeilan

Advantages: The cinematography, the storyline, the acting, the direction...
Disadvantages: Not a single one in my opinion

...a job as caretaker at the Overlook Hotel during the winter months, when no-one can holiday there because of the weather conditions. He takes his wife, Wendy, and son, Danny, with him, despite the hotel manager's warnings that a caretaker had gone mad from loneliness one winter, murdering his wife and children before killing himself. The first few weeks are spent quite happily, although Danny has hallucinations of the past and the future, none of ...
...wasn't his father, it was the woman in room 237, although Jack claims that there is no-one in the room. As Jack's behaviour becomes more and more aggressive, Wendy begins to fear for her life and that of her son. Will any of them get out alive? I would imagine/hope that there are few people who haven't heard of The Shining. Based on the novel by Stephen King and directed by Stanley Kubrick, it was made back in 1980, and yet for me and many others, ... Read review

Projectile Green Vomit And And Daddy's Axe!
Review of Gruesome Twosome - The Exorcist/The Shining DVD by bigush

Advantages: two classic horrors in one box
Disadvantages: no extras, if you care!

The first thing I thought when I saw this compilation was; 'What an arbitrary coupling of films!'. However, on reflection, maybe it is quite apt in some ways. They are certainly both iconic horror films. They both have reputations for scaring the socks off cinema audiences at the time they were made. They both have casts that include some of the best cinema actors to be found and were both somewhat groundbreaking in their direction and cinematic ...
...possession. Having said that, they tap very different sources of horror in us, sources that have almost been tapped dry since. In the case of 'The Exorcist' it is the shock and awe of demonic evil. With 'The Shining' it is the familiar becoming the dangerous. The Exorcist (1973) *********** Directed by William Friedkin, this is the story of the demonic possession of a little girl (Linda Blair) who is the daughter of an actress (Ellen Burstyn). ... 3 Classic Horror Movies from the Past
Review of 3 Classic Horrors Of The Silver Screen - Vol. 3 - Little Shop Of Horrors / The Bat / Bride Of The Monster DVD by ladyvalmont

Advantages: Engaging Story Lines
Disadvantages: Lack of special effects due to production period

...the genre of horror, these 3 classics can bring enjoyment to all those that appreciate horror of high quality. With the use of compelling storylines and gruesome images, the viewer is left always anxious at what would come next - that's how true horror began to develop. Through these elements, those who watch it forget the fanciful special effects that present day cinema offers and is taken in by this collection's creative brilliance. All 3 movies ...
...plot lines and cinematic professionalism. "Little Shop of Horrors" focusses more on the "horrible" part of horror movies, whereas "The Bat" proves as having more of a psychological effect on the viewers. "The Bride of the Monster" is for all those who are interested in the horror genre as a whole - one of the movies that inspired future horror producers. ... Read review

The Little Shop Of Horrors DVD
Review of The Little Shop Of Horrors DVD by y01larkin

Advantages: good film once you get into it
Disadvantages: takes a bit to get into the film

...surrounding them somehow know all the words. But even I am completely captivated by "Little Shop of Horrors", with its Motown-esque numbers, stellar cast, and dark yet hilarious brand of humour. Rick Moranis - showing off a surprisingly competent singing voice - takes the lead as down-on-his-luck uber-nerd Seymour Krelborn, the plant store assistant whose life is turned upside down by the arrival of a "mean green mother from outer-space". The newcomer ...
...sudden barrage of customers to the shop, but there's a catch. Audrey II has developed a taste for blood, and before too long Seymour's gonna have to feed him. On top form is Steve Martin as the floppy-fringed dentist who, when not exercising his particularly painful line in tooth-extraction, is squeaky-voiced Audrey's less-than-doting boyfriend. Also popping up along the way are the late great John Candy as a wacko radio DJ, James Belushi as an ... Read review

a great family film
Review of The Little Shop Of Horrors DVD by blasphemous_girl

Advantages: funny and a must-see
Disadvantages: may not be suitable for younger children

...and although I do enjoy the Rick Moranis remake, I do adore this version. Steve Martin is brilliant in the newer one, but Jack Nicholson rivals him for comedy performance in the original. Behind the comedic plot of a giant-talking-man-eating plant that needs more meat as it grows bigger and bigger, the story is rather sad, as poor Seymour tries his best to satisy Audrey ll (the plant) and the girl of his dreams Audrey. A few laughs are definate with ... Read review
