Fairies are real...
Review of Once - James Herbert by
amylovelace
Advantages: Great if you are a kid at heart
Disadvantages: Don't bother reading it if you lack imagination
If you still believe in fairies (myself admitted) then you must read this book!
This book has some poor reviews but I really liked it - then again I am a kid at heart!
I am a big fan of James Herbert but I generally don't read best-sellers - this time I made an exception - after I read the blurb i just had to have it!!!
It mixes horror with fantasy: including witches / goblins / fairies etc...
If you are scared of spiders you should be warned ... ...probably give you nightmares for years to come (as it did me).
You should also be warned (although you may expect it if you are an avid James Herbert fan) of the sexual content... it was very strange!!!
The only thing that made this book hard to read was that I had to keep throwing it to the floor when it got too scary! ...

Not His Best
Review of Out Are The Lights - Richard Laymon by
Arbobug
Advantages: Scary, and quite original
Disadvantages: Wanders off topic sometimes
Out Are The Lights is interesting because it contains one novella and five other short stories. The big story though, is obviously the most important thing about this book. Although I found it quite an enjoyable read, I thought the storyline was a little cheesy. The plot is that there is a couple of mad people out there who put people into various horrific situations, film them and sell it to a film. company. It all sounds a little "Goosebumps" or ... ...All in all Out Are The Lights isn't bad. As a Richard Laymon fan I was quite dissapointed, but it's not exactly the worst book I've read. There are parts of the story I will always remember, but I wouldn't pick it up and read it again, unless it was for one of the short stories. ...

James Herbert - The Others
Review of Others - James Herbert by
Sammy45999
Advantages: Nothing like the Film made with Nicole Kidman - completely different story
Disadvantages: slighlty long and slightly boring in stages!
...nothing like the film The Others that came out recently - which is good.!!
Nicholas Dismas is a private detective and is set to investigate the strangest story of all!
The investigation takes him to mysterious places that you'll never forget! The descriptions the Dismas gives of the secrets he uncovers is shocking and highly memorable for there fear invoking feeling.
Not the best James Herbert book I have read (I ahve read them all) but a good ...

Fascinating and invaluable.
Review of On Writing - Stephen King by
JoannaPiano
Advantages: Practical, useful and inspiring.
Disadvantages: Slightly rambling here and there.
...that writing requires. Focus on the story, he says. Know who you are writing for and what will engage them. Read widely. Show don't tell. No, it isn't rocket science. But where other writers of how-to-write books might dress it all up in fancy mystique, Stephen King tells it in a very straightforward, no-nonsense way.
I also found the autobiographical sections of the book a fascinating insight into how he works and where he gets his ideas. You don't ...

Best foot forward!
Review of Only forward - Michael Marshall Smith by
atytyut2434
Advantages: Stark & Spangle!
Disadvantages: Gets a bit surreal
...lives and the inhabitants are only allowed on the streets at certain times if their wearing a certain colour, Cat (a place only inhabited by cats, you can only visit if you like cats otherwise the gates won't open to let you in. Spangle spends most of his time there), The Action Centre (surrounded by a very big wall is where people get things done, its for people who work hard and really want to be busy all the time) where Stark's friend Zenda lives ... ...and work) and Red (possibly the most danergous place to live ever).
Stark is hired by the Action Centre to find an Actioneer who has gone missing. The rest of the book details Stark's travels through various Neighbourhoods until he finds and rescues Fell Ackland, the man who was not missing. He had actually smuggled himself out of The Action Centre after making a discovery about a highly addictive drug which is prevalent in Starks world.
The book ...
