...managed to write a book. Luckily he had a few hidden away in a safety deposit box. He used them to try and hide the fact of his writers block to his editor and while the books last he gets away with things. He then decides after a 6 week vacation to Key Largo to move to his second home 'Sara Laughs' where he was always able to write. On his first evening there he starts hearing strange noises like a child crying. He travels to a local cafe and ... Read review

Bitten: A book about a female werewolf
Review of Bitten - Kelley Armstrong by hannahjex

Advantages: Great read! Plus you know there'll be more fun coming in the sequels!
Disadvantages: You can't put it down! Addictive, so you'll spend money on the sequels!

...ISBN: 0-7515-3094-8 GENERAL INFO: Bitten is the first book in Kelly Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series. The rest of the novels in the series (in order) are Stolen, Dime Store Magic, Industrial Magic, Haunted, Broken, No Humans Involved, and Personal Demon; with the 9th instalment due in the US in November 2008. As the title of the series suggests, each novel stars a supernatural female living on modern day earth amongst the regular human ...
...werewolf trait genetically. Elena is bitten (hence the name of the book-ha ha! Clever Hannah)-by her then boyfriend, Clayton Danvers, no less-and because, as we find out, few humans ever survive being bitten, she-grudgingly and unwillingly-gains the honour of being the only female werewolf in existence. Hurrah! No, Elena is not pleased. Though Clayton reckons he only bit Elena because he loved her and thought it was the only way that they could be ... Read review

Sadistic Vampire Hell
Review of Bite - Richard Laymon by kitty17

Advantages: There's a vampire in it
Disadvantages: Overlong, tedious and repetitive

Introduction Laymon's horror fiction could be described as puerile, blatantly and overtly sexual, a little predictable and trite nonsense, I have read many of his novels and found them both troubling and mildly offensive, but again I go back to him and read him again because he does at times deliver some good old fashioned chills and thrills too. His novels are usually fronted by young sexually frustrated men, men who are perhaps on the skinny ...
...which makes them more often 'good friend' rather than 'boyfriend' material, they are often in their twenties but are seemingly more adolescent in their attitude and outlook. The women, or girls in the novels are written almost exclusively one-dimensionally, they are described and represented simply as sexual beings in Laymon's fiction. His fiction is usually written in a fast-paced, straight-forward, gung-ho, go-get-em style, and we are frequently ... Read review

Take a Deep Breath
Review of Breathe - Christopher Fowler by Soho_Black

Advantages: Great fun to read
Disadvantages: Not great value and not terribly original

When my last Amazon order turned up, I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed by the contents. Sure, it was everything I’d ordered, including two recent books by one of my favourite authors, Christopher Fowler. One of these was the cause of my disappointment. Not for the contents, but for the size. For £7.99, I expected something a little more than a slim volume containing fewer pages, albeit bigger ones, than the instruction manual for my PDA. ...
...but I was expecting a novel length novel, rather than something that looks like a short story on its own. You’ve heard the old phrase about not judging a book by its cover, right? Well, I did. At the very least, I was judging a book by the size of the gap between the covers. More fool me. It’s Ben Harper’s first day as the Health and Safety Officer at SymaxCorp. His predecessor left his job suddenly about three weeks previously although the evidence ... Read review
