A jolly warped read
Review of Abarat - Clive Barker by
DolphinWatcher30
Advantages: An excellent & imaginative story
Disadvantages: Waiting for the next book
As a children's story this is some seriously dark writing and may not be suitable of younger readers, but for adults it's an exceptionally good read. The heroine of the story, Candy, finds herself pulled into a parallel world by a strange sea, a world that consists of 25 islands. 24 islands represent a particular hour of the day with the 25th a dark place of murder and madness. This initial volume sees Candy's travels around a selection of these ... ...trying to stay out of arms reach of the dark servants of the Lord of the 25th hour. This is a place where friend and foe are never what they seem and many are out for the capture of Candy.
The illustrations included in this book give it an extra and enjoyably warped depth. Clive Barkers visual take on his fantasy world is one where even the good-guys can be seen as ugly monstrosities.
You'll definitely want to read the next instalment. ...

Childhood Reborn
Review of The Thief of Always - Clive Barker by
Michael_Dyer
Advantages: Makes me dream of being young again
Disadvantages: The illustrations limits its age range
...started to read it on the way home from college. 5 hours later it was finished.
This book literally could not be put down. I was captivated from the beginning to the end, why ? well lets begin. . .
From the opening line this book will grab you Clive's usual "visual vocabulary" draws you in and lets your imagination do your reading for you. As a male reader i was instantly transformed into one of the main characters Harvy Swick. Although i was still ... ...my brother playing out in the parks and fields around lambeth.
This was the book that made me rethink the books i normally read and i have since continued to pick up the odd book from the childrens section.
The story is set in Mr Hoods Holiday House with its weird and colourfull characters that you come to expect from Clive Barker. Every few pages there is an illustration which is themed from that part of the book. This helps the younger readers ...

...And Not a Drop to Drink
Review of The Water Room - Christopher Fowler by
Soho_Black
Advantages: Fowler works to his strengths for the first time in a Bryant and May mystery
Disadvantages: A few references to previous novels that will be lost on the first time reader
...Detectives Bryant and May of the Metropolitan Police's Peculiar Crimes Unit, I was initially quite excited. A couple of books later, however, I was less enthusiastic. "Full Dark House", the first of these books, was not amongst Fowler's better works and the second, "Seventy Seven Clocks" was merely a slightly edited version of his earlier novel "Darkest Day", which had also not counted among my favourites.
So it was that I approached "The Water ... ...off enough not to buy the book, but I was a little worried about what I may find within.
The PCU is recovering from the events of "Full Dark House" when Bryant is approached by an old friend, Benjamin Singh, who has recently discovered the dead body of his sister Ruth. Ruth apparently drowned whilst sitting upright in her own kitchen, fully clothed. This is the kind of conundrum that Bryant loves and he agrees to help his old friend. Meanwhile, ...

Bleak House
Review of Full Dark House - Christopher Fowler by
Soho_Black
Advantages: Nice to see Bryant and May again
Disadvantages: Not an absorbing mysetery
...of having to pay the full £6.99 cover price is very rare. The Amazon Marketplace has copies from £1.40, which I would recommend for the fan, but only one who wants to be able to claim they have all Fowler’s work. For anyone who has never read his books, I’d thoroughly recommend Fowler, but not this one. ...

An Incredible Book You Cannot Overlook
Review of The Imajica volumes I and II - Clive Barker by
joebloggs321
Advantages: This has to be the best book I have ever read!!
Disadvantages: You won't sleep till you finish the book.
...encountering wonderous imagination created by the writer 'Clive Barker'. Four of these dominions are reconciled but as usual ours 'the earth' is oblivious to the existance of any. Its inhabitants cut off from the magic and mystery that the dominions hold. Only a small few know of the imajica and all it offers but many are frightened as a mystical time is approaching, a time where the earth can be reconciled with the other four dominions.
There are ... ...dominions and arrive to find the greatest mystery of all. But to realise the outcome of the journeys undertaken you will now have to go and get a copy of this book, and believe me you will not be disappointed.
