Action, adventure and a canine comic.
Review of Dark Rivers of the Heart - Dean Koontz by
frizzball
Advantages: Great action
Disadvantages: Could make you paranoid
I first read this novel about four years ago and remembered that I could not put it down, so when I was clearing out books to sell on Ebay I thought I’d read it again as I could not remember the exact ending.
*THE STORYLINE*
The novel is centred on the main character, Spencer Grant, and his adorable dog, Rocky. Grant is a loner and from the first chapter there are clues to his obvious torment of things in his past. A chance encounter with a waitress ... ...hope of a new life, but all is shattered when on his return visit to her, he finds she has fled.
Curiosity leads him deep into her world, with false names and a life on the run, although who she is running from is unclear to him. He endeavours to find this mysterious woman. Eventually, he learns she is being chased by an unknown agency for the information she possesses, Grant knows he must help her, as the same people are now chasing him.
*MY OPINION*

Demon Seed by Dean Koontz
Review of Demon Seed - Dean Koontz by
sterpen83
Advantages: addictive style of writing - you cant put it down!! short book (under 200 pages)
Disadvantages: Fluency of book not so good at times - repetitive phrases throughout, gets annoying!

Do you look under your bed!!
Review of Darkness Comes - Dean Koontz by
shybelle
Advantages: Easy storyline to follow
Disadvantages: none
As an avid reader of Dean Koontz's books (I own most of what he's written) I only came across this one quite recently whilst browsing our local library.
This book tells the story of single dad Jack Dawson, a detective in New York and his two children Penny and Davey. Jack and his partner Rebcca have become embroiled in a series of very strange murders which defy logic. In another part of the city, recently arrived Baba Lavelle is a man with vengeance ... ...and his stranglehold on the city thereby plunging New York into serious gang warfare. With no guns or money to buy assassins Baba's convinced he can succeed for he has an ancient power, terrifyingly brutal, and extremely dangerous, that thrives in darkness. Meanwhile at home his daughter Penny, usually very grown up and sensible for her tender years has suddenly become very afraid of the dark. Something is coming after her and Davey.

A jolly warped read
Review of Abarat - Clive Barker by
DolphinWatcher30
Advantages: An excellent & imaginative story
Disadvantages: Waiting for the next book
As a children's story this is some seriously dark writing and may not be suitable of younger readers, but for adults it's an exceptionally good read. The heroine of the story, Candy, finds herself pulled into a parallel world by a strange sea, a world that consists of 25 islands. 24 islands represent a particular hour of the day with the 25th a dark place of murder and madness. This initial volume sees Candy's travels around a selection of these ... ...trying to stay out of arms reach of the dark servants of the Lord of the 25th hour. This is a place where friend and foe are never what they seem and many are out for the capture of Candy.
The illustrations included in this book give it an extra and enjoyably warped depth. Clive Barkers visual take on his fantasy world is one where even the good-guys can be seen as ugly monstrosities.
You'll definitely want to read the next instalment. ...

Don't Lose Out!
Review of Lord Loss (The Demonata) - Darren Shan by
Borg
Advantages: Easy to read, hard to put down, gripping, thrilling
Disadvantages: None
...he must face the demon Lord Loss. I am probably being vague here, but I do not want to give much more away as that will spoil it for readers. At 200 or so pages this is just right. I feel there is far too much padding in adult books at the moment. And reading Lord Loss has made me feel surprised just at how good kids' fiction is. I have read the Harry Potter books, like most adults, but it did not cross my mind to read other works written for children. ... ...is quite graphic. There are no holds barred here and the author gets away with a lot of stuff. Death, blood, gore… But it is written with tongue in cheek - and with plenty of sick humour that did surprise me. The style is straight to the point. And very well written at that!
Darren Shan is English born, real surname O'Shaughnessy. His first book, 'Ayuamarca,' was published in 1999, but did not sell well. This was an adult work, and it is his subsequent ...
