Be Careful What You Wish For...
Review of Dead Witch Walking - Kim Harrison by Entwife

Advantages: light and entertaining supernatural fantasy, excellent villains, brazen hero looking for action
Disadvantages: Rachel's flightiness makes it difficult to stay focused sometimes

...manner of supernatural critters. In Dead Witch Walking, we are introduced to all the major players, the stage is set and we the readers need only enjoy it as it all unfolds. Plenty of action, brimming with good humor and witty repartee, I particularly enjoyed the unique characters, interesting setting, and the fact that society has shunned the tomato in all its forms for carrying that deadly virus! The pacing can be a bit choppy and the copy I read ...
...minor drawbacks that didn't slow me down at all. Light, enjoyable, and entertaining, Harrison's characters drew me into their world, and made me feel like a friend rather than a voyeur. I love books that make me laugh out loud in public places! I was drawn to find out more, and that is what makes or breaks any first in a series. By the last page, I had to have book two waiting for me, and oh yes, dear serial readers, as of Feb. 26, 2008 there will ... Read review

Dead and almost forgotten
Review of Dying Words - Shaun Hutson by britum2000

Advantages: Another Shaun Hutson book.
Disadvantages: Another Shaun Hutson book!

...always fulsome and those for Dying Words were no exception. In them he admits to having writer's block for some time and reveals that a chance conversation with a friend gave him the idea for his latest offering. A newly inspired Shaun Hutson! My curiousity was aroused, so I delved in. Before I begin, a few words of caution are necessary about Shaun Hutson and his writing style, especially if you are new to the author. Hutson is a formula writer; ...
...So there you are, Dying Words is a locked room mystery thriller with the usual Hutson bad taste thrown in for good measure. He is certainly never going to win the Booker Prize but his schlock horror efforts will guarantee a healthy bank balance. If you want an undemanding read with cheap thrills, try it. Then again, there are some great authors out there, crying out to be read. The copy I picked up was a hardback, published by Orbit books at a cost ... Read review

Rats, Rabies & Radiation!
Review of Domain - James Herbert by wendybull

Advantages: Excellent descriptions
Disadvantages: It's the last one!

Domain is the third in the series from Herbert, based on the mutant, giant killer rats. In my opinion it is the best of the three and can be enjoyed as a standalone book or if read in order as a trilogy it is even better. OVERVIEW London and the surrounding areas are hit with five nuclear bombs. The warning sirens are very late to wail and very few have time to escape to shelters. Hundreds flee into underground railway stations to avoid the blasts ...
...are simply blown to bits or crushed and mutilated from collapsing buildings. Culver was on his way to the bank when the sirens began their frightening alarm, and whilst running to find appropriate shelter, he bumps into Dealey, a man who has been blinded by the flash of the bomb but who knows of a government shelter that will protect them if they can reach it. Down into the tunnels of the underground station they go, watching countless atrocities ... Read review

as good as the rest
Review of Definitely Dead - Charlaine Harris by blasphemous_girl

Advantages: a great summer read.
Disadvantages: slightly frustrated with certain plot-twists.

I'm a big fan of Charlaine Harris's books, but was a bit worried when I read on other review sites that this book was apparently a bit of a let down. I was happy, then, that I enjoyed it as much as the other books of the Southern Vampire Mysteries Series. It has as many twists, turns, enemies and action as the others, all mixed with hot-blooded, sexy males and sharp-toothed vampires. Harris writes fast-paced books that hook you on page one, and she ... Read review

A jolly warped read
Review of Abarat - Clive Barker by DolphinWatcher30

Advantages: An excellent & imaginative story
Disadvantages: Waiting for the next book

As a children's story this is some seriously dark writing and may not be suitable of younger readers, but for adults it's an exceptionally good read. The heroine of the story, Candy, finds herself pulled into a parallel world by a strange sea, a world that consists of 25 islands. 24 islands represent a particular hour of the day with the 25th a dark place of murder and madness. This initial volume sees Candy's travels around a selection of these ...
...trying to stay out of arms reach of the dark servants of the Lord of the 25th hour. This is a place where friend and foe are never what they seem and many are out for the capture of Candy. The illustrations included in this book give it an extra and enjoyably warped depth. Clive Barkers visual take on his fantasy world is one where even the good-guys can be seen as ugly monstrosities. You'll definitely want to read the next instalment. ... Read review
