Domain is the third in the series from Herbert, based on the mutant, giant killer rats. In my opinion it is the best of the three and can be enjoyed as a standalone book or if read in order as a trilogy it is even better. OVERVIEW London and the surrounding areas are hit with five nuclear bombs. The warning sirens are very late to wail and very few have time to escape to shelters. I'm a big fan of Charlaine Harris's books, but was a bit worried when I read on other review sites that this book was apparently a bit of a let down. I was happy, then, that I enjoyed it as much as the other books of the Southern Vampire Mysteries Series. As a children's story this is some seriously dark writing and may not be suitable of younger readers, but for adults it's an exceptionally good read. The heroine of the story, Candy, finds herself pulled into a parallel world by a strange sea, a world that consists of 25 islands. 24 islands represent a particular hour of the day with the 25th a dark place of murder and madness. The illustrations included in this book give it an extra and enjoyably warped depth. Clive Barkers visual take on his fantasy world is one where even the good-guys can be seen as ugly monstrosities.
