Advantages: Contains some of Stephen King's best recent horror stories

'Everything's Eventual' (2002) by Stephen King **** This is the first collection of short stories by Stephen King I have read since 'Four Past Midnight' way back in 1990. I have always considered him a master of the form and, if anything, a better short story writer than he is a novelist - though I'm sure he wouldn't be too pleased to hear it. Previous collections include: 'Night Shift' (1978) ***** [astonishingly good], 'Different Seasons' (1982) ...
...(1990) ****½, 'Nightmares And Dreamscapes' (1993) & 'Hearts In Atlantis' (1999) - the last two of which I have yet to read. Compared to his early superlative collections I have to say 'Everything's Eventual' is something of a mixed bag. Endless Night was by far the best richard laymon book i have read, if not the best book i have ever read. He is a very graphic writer so this is not for the squeemish. I however love the detail he gives. He really puts a picture into your head and you really get to know the characters. Its a great read and you will probably find that once you get into it you wont be able to put the book down as your on edge all the time about whats going to happen ... Read review

Disadvantages: Left to chance a bit much

Its not often I am really grossed out or scared by a book. The occasional flinch here and there is always a good sign, more due to my crazy imagination than the subtle prodding by the words of any given writer. Brite on the other hand decided to forego the gentle prods to my imagination. Instead she tied me to the bed (which after reaching the gory conclusion is a strangely apt metaphor) and gouged at my innards with a rusty screwdriver while sipping ...
...name in her best Sunday dress. I had heard a few things that interested me enough to pick this book up. Mainly due to the fact that Brite regularly likes to throw some horned up gays into her story lines - something, I must admit I am partial to. Adding to this was the reputation for blood and guts and madness she has built firmly upon. I suppose I saw it as some sort of challenge. HA! YOU WILL NOT PHASE ME!!! ...would read Eon again, but Eternity went to the charity shop. Not that its a bad book, far from it, but a writer of Greg Bears talent really doesn't need to rehash old ground. Eternity levels off after Eon and is a reprise for some of the characters. It doesn't really have anywhere to go and it kind of dulls the impact of the first book. No thanks, next . . . ...
