A bit of this and a bit of that
Review of Fiends - Richard Laymon by
yukkibear
Advantages: gripping read
Disadvantages: some stories have been published elsewhere
...book in my opinion
Fiends is of a different style to Laymon's normal writing. This is a collection of short stories, some weirder than others, and some are also longer than others. When picking up a Richard Laymon book, especially if ordering from online you should watch that it's not another novel previously published under a different name. Also when buying a collection of short stories as this one is you need to make sure the short story itself ... ...already have it.
I don't want to give away the entire plots, just giving you a general gist of what you will be reading.
^^^FIENDS^^^
This is one of the longest of the stories in the book. Focusing on a girl called Marty, now in her twenties. When she was a teenager, she was raped in her own house.
For some strange reason she still lives in the house with her parents, and the man is out of prison and out to get Marty.
Revenge comes from Willy ...

Funland by Richard Laymon
Review of Funland - Richard Laymon by
jamidomobilio
Advantages: A real page turner with decent characters and a good story.
Disadvantages: You won't get much sleep till it's finished
...least expects it.
While Funland isn't one of Lamon's more bloodthirsty works, it is hard to beat for excitement, atmosphere, and the ability it has on the reader to make them stay up till all hours of the morning turning those pages. When the tide finally turns on the 'Trollers' in the prolonged climax I challenge you to put the book down and go to sleep before finding out which of the characters survive to tell the tale - i certainly couldn't. ...

I'll keep my own flesh thanks
Review of Flesh - Richard Laymon by
ang_2906
Advantages: a gripping read
Disadvantages: if you don't like horror, you wont like this
...is of course, Richard Laymon.
Flesh is one of Richard Laymon's earlier novels being published in 1988. Set in America as all his books are, the novel sets itself around a community of people, the main character being a policeman looking to fight crime within the community and generally rid all bad guys. This isn't always the easiest thing to do when circumstances and beings beyond your control is out to destroy all normality.
The story starts with ... ...of the book.
Personally Flesh is a book unlike an I have ever read before, yet it doesn't bore me like some books that contain weird beings and supernatural characters etc.
It's an easy read at 333 pages, and wont have you flicking back through the pages trying to remember what complicated piece of detail you may have missed on the previous page. Yet it's not quite as easy reading as chick lit can be either.
I can highly recommend Flesh to you ...

A jolly warped read
Review of Abarat - Clive Barker by
DolphinWatcher30
Advantages: An excellent & imaginative story
Disadvantages: Waiting for the next book
As a children's story this is some seriously dark writing and may not be suitable of younger readers, but for adults it's an exceptionally good read. The heroine of the story, Candy, finds herself pulled into a parallel world by a strange sea, a world that consists of 25 islands. 24 islands represent a particular hour of the day with the 25th a dark place of murder and madness. This initial volume sees Candy's travels around a selection of these ... ...trying to stay out of arms reach of the dark servants of the Lord of the 25th hour. This is a place where friend and foe are never what they seem and many are out for the capture of Candy.
The illustrations included in this book give it an extra and enjoyably warped depth. Clive Barkers visual take on his fantasy world is one where even the good-guys can be seen as ugly monstrosities.
You'll definitely want to read the next instalment. ...

Don't Lose Out!
Review of Lord Loss (The Demonata) - Darren Shan by
Borg
Advantages: Easy to read, hard to put down, gripping, thrilling
Disadvantages: None
...he must face the demon Lord Loss. I am probably being vague here, but I do not want to give much more away as that will spoil it for readers. At 200 or so pages this is just right. I feel there is far too much padding in adult books at the moment. And reading Lord Loss has made me feel surprised just at how good kids' fiction is. I have read the Harry Potter books, like most adults, but it did not cross my mind to read other works written for children. ... ...is quite graphic. There are no holds barred here and the author gets away with a lot of stuff. Death, blood, gore… But it is written with tongue in cheek - and with plenty of sick humour that did surprise me. The style is straight to the point. And very well written at that!
Darren Shan is English born, real surname O'Shaughnessy. His first book, 'Ayuamarca,' was published in 1999, but did not sell well. This was an adult work, and it is his subsequent ...
