I have to stay awake, I have to stay awake
Review of Prey - Graham Masterton by Deenie

Advantages: Scary, cannot put the book down, very easy read!
Disadvantages: Scary, couldn't sleep :)

I bought this book last summer before going on holiday. I always go out and find at least four books to take away with me - holidays are usually the only time that I have to read for pleasure. I had never read anything by Graham Masterton and if it were not for the special deal that Makro were doing (three books for £5) I would probably gone for a Stephen King or Dean Koontz book. As this deal was so very good I chose three books from a limited selection, ...
...back of the book sounded okay, nothing special - even a bit over the top, so it was not one of the first books that I read when I arrived in Cyprus. However, when its turn came I found myself unable to put this book down! Yes the story was unbelievable and yet it gave me nightmares. I'm 23 and I was scared to turn off the light! No don't laugh, you may only laugh once you have read the book - and I guarantee you won't be laughing at the end of it. ... Read review

Get Your Teeth into this, if you dare!
Review of The Tooth Fairy - Graham Joyce by Elffriend

Advantages: A masterful Read
Disadvantages: I could have given it six stars

...of a previous publication and the basic plot appealed to my sense of the ridiculous. It came highly recommended by a variety of newspapers and authors alike, including the great Iain Banks, what more could I want? For once I am leaving author details to the end, a suggestion from another Ciao member. I read it in two sittings, the book is only 320 pages, but I did start it last night and reluctantly left it halfway through to finish it today. As ...
...horror stories to read it, the story is superbly mastered and is so evocative of the angst of children growing up in the sixties era that I found myself saying “yes, that is the way it was.” A story sketch ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^ I am defining this as a sketch, as the story or plot is so good to give much away, yet a plot needs some gist to capture the reader’s attention. The first chapter opens with a taste of what is to come and introduces the gang ... Read review

Flirting with Disaster
Review of The Black Company Series - Glen Cook by StormSaje

Advantages: Full of surprises and wry wit. Strong characterization and dialog.
Disadvantages: Dark and brooding. No clear-cut "hero" through most of the series.

...is an end to itself, the rogue mercenary troop known as "The Black Company" fights to survive against long odds again and again. The initial book is a first person narrative written by the company doctor, a cynical man named Croaker. It starts as the company is attempting to flee a city where they were hired to keep order but where they were, as usual, betrayed by those who'd hired them. Upon escaping, they are offered a commission by a servant ...
...is, at best, frightening. The Black Company takes the commission. They are in the business of fighting for pay. They are thrown into a war of epic proportions, where magic is thrown around with gleeful abandon. Not only do they have to fight the enemy, a group of rebels fighting against the dark queen, but they have to be wary of the in-fighting among her servants. It doesn't take long for them to realize they are in over their heads. The series ... Read review

Beware of suckers
Review of Sweet Silver Blues - Glen Cook by Coloneljohn

Advantages: Humourous homage to Chandler
Disadvantages: Getting hold of copies

This was supposed to be an easy job. Run down to the Cantard, find a woman to whom his veteran pal had left a fortune and return said person to the family home. Easy! But Garrett had done his five in the Cantard and did not want to return, ever. In this world nothing is ever as easy as it seems. There were the other veterans interested in the money. There was sister Rose who was very interested in the money and no competition. This was an area of ...
...and Vampires. Garrett is going to need some serious back up This is the fantasy world of TunFaire. It is a river port town where the stormwardens and firelords and other uppers sit up on the hill like vultures waiting for a profit. Where the rest of the town spreads to the river docks, with workshops, homes, slums and shanties. Where despair is common and life is cheep. There has been a war going on for generations between the Karentine and the ... Read review

Dogs?...all right Jackals
Review of Whispering Nickel Idols - Glen Cook by Coloneljohn

Advantages: Entertaining fantasy
Disadvantages: Getting hold of a copy

The city of TunFaire is situated on a river. With all the necessary docks and port facilities for trade. The upper city is described as The Hill. This is the preserve of the upper class. Well to do merchants, The magic users (who have the money to buy the silver that powers magic). This is a clean peaceful area. The private armies keep it so. There is the street of the Gods, where all the major religions and cults have a temple. You're nobody unless ...
...Garrett knows to his regret that ALL the gods are real, just not very nice. Then there are the other areas. Places where the ordinary citizens try to live and work. Areas where the other races tend to congregate. Such as Dwarves, Elves, Trolls etc. There are of course the half breeds, quarter breeds and persons with lesser amounts of non human blood in them. Some of these races were created by the magicians of old. The others came about because ... Read review
