I have to stay awake, I have to stay awake
Review of Prey - Graham Masterton by Deenie

Advantages: Scary, cannot put the book down, very easy read!
Disadvantages: Scary, couldn't sleep :)

I bought this book last summer before going on holiday. I always go out and find at least four books to take away with me - holidays are usually the only time that I have to read for pleasure. I had never read anything by Graham Masterton and if it were not for the special deal that Makro were doing (three books for £5) I would probably gone for a Stephen King or Dean Koontz book. As this deal was so very good I chose three books from a limited selection, ...
...back of the book sounded okay, nothing special - even a bit over the top, so it was not one of the first books that I read when I arrived in Cyprus. However, when its turn came I found myself unable to put this book down! Yes the story was unbelievable and yet it gave me nightmares. I'm 23 and I was scared to turn off the light! No don't laugh, you may only laugh once you have read the book - and I guarantee you won't be laughing at the end of it. ... Read review

Share My Pain
Review of Personal Demons - Gregory Lamberson by RichardW

Advantages: Getting up close and personal with horror authors, all eager to pass on a little of what make them tick in the dark, macabre way they do.
Disadvantages: You sometimes find yourself unbearably close and personal - don't try to digest this too quickly, as the personal, distressing nature of some of the stories can reach a critical mass.

** Just a quick addition to the below - I'm pleased to note that this anthology is currently short-listed for the Bram Stoker Award in the Non-Fiction category. Told you it was good... ** "Ironically, I make my living scaring people with words. But… no matter how scary it gets, you can close the book… Your definition of scary is drastically altered when one day it all becomes real." From 'The Night the Earth Moved' by Gary Brandner ...
...ever read a good horror novel and wondered quietly just what kind of person the author must be to have penned something that disturbed you so? Does that feeling of awe walk hand in hand with a slight sense of unease? Are all horror authors intrinsically unstable or wildly unhinged? Well, yes and no, according to this very unique anthology. This stunning looking limited edition ebook from Lone Wolf Publications comes on CD-ROM, and asks the contributors ... Read review

Oh!...Gods!!
Review of Petty Pewter Gods - Glen Cook by Coloneljohn

Advantages: The eighth book of Garretts adventures
Disadvantages: Getting hold of copies

Garrett is in trouble with the Gods. The Gods themselves are in trouble Garrett is content not to worry about the Gods if they will return the favour and not worry about him. But these Gods are in trouble. The Street of the Gods can only hold so many temples and places of worship. A cult can have thousands of followers but if it is not on The Street of the Gods then it is nothing important. With all the new peoples flooding into TunFaire there ...
...space for the newer gods. That means that some are going to go. Two rival pantheons are both looking for the key to a temple. The ones who find it get to stay, the others are returned!. No god wants to be Returned. The top Gods who set up the competition arrange for Garrett to find the key. This does not prove popular though some of the lady Gods do appear to be rather tasty to his eyes. Gods do not like a mortal who says No. These are very old ... Read review

A jolly warped read
Review of Abarat - Clive Barker by DolphinWatcher30

Advantages: An excellent & imaginative story
Disadvantages: Waiting for the next book

As a children's story this is some seriously dark writing and may not be suitable of younger readers, but for adults it's an exceptionally good read. The heroine of the story, Candy, finds herself pulled into a parallel world by a strange sea, a world that consists of 25 islands. 24 islands represent a particular hour of the day with the 25th a dark place of murder and madness. This initial volume sees Candy's travels around a selection of these ...
...trying to stay out of arms reach of the dark servants of the Lord of the 25th hour. This is a place where friend and foe are never what they seem and many are out for the capture of Candy. The illustrations included in this book give it an extra and enjoyably warped depth. Clive Barkers visual take on his fantasy world is one where even the good-guys can be seen as ugly monstrosities. You'll definitely want to read the next instalment. ... Read review

Don't Lose Out!
Review of Lord Loss (The Demonata) - Darren Shan by Borg

Advantages: Easy to read, hard to put down, gripping, thrilling
Disadvantages: None

...he must face the demon Lord Loss. I am probably being vague here, but I do not want to give much more away as that will spoil it for readers. At 200 or so pages this is just right. I feel there is far too much padding in adult books at the moment. And reading Lord Loss has made me feel surprised just at how good kids' fiction is. I have read the Harry Potter books, like most adults, but it did not cross my mind to read other works written for children. ...
...is quite graphic. There are no holds barred here and the author gets away with a lot of stuff. Death, blood, gore… But it is written with tongue in cheek - and with plenty of sick humour that did surprise me. The style is straight to the point. And very well written at that! Darren Shan is English born, real surname O'Shaughnessy. His first book, 'Ayuamarca,' was published in 1999, but did not sell well. This was an adult work, and it is his subsequent ... Read review
