Crikley Hall
Review of The Secret of Crickley Hall - James Herbert by
DancingKate
Advantages: Keeps you guessing till the end
Disadvantages: none
...ill over Xmas it was the perfect tonic and excuse to stay in bed.
A book well worth reading with the usual brilliance expected from the author. The beginning of the story has so many possibilities that you are kept guessing as to what could be occurring within Crickley Hall to cause the weirdness.
There is a vast array of characters and depending upon your view of life it will be a personal choice as to whom the lead character within the novel ...

Trashy Classic Horror
Review of Haunted - James Herbert by
amylovelace
Advantages: A very easy read - with an unexpected twist!
Disadvantages: A bit cheesy - especially the film
This is a classic scary story... it was the first I read by James Herbert and it got me hooked!
It is a trashy horror - a nice easy read - but I wouldn't reccommend reading it alone in bed!
It's so good that a film was made based on this book - film is a bit cheesy!
It can be very frightening in parts - but if you are already a fan you will expect this.
It is like one of those ghost stories you hear - that you are not sure whether to believe ...

AMAZING!
Review of The Fog - James Herbert by
xxxbabixxx
Advantages: Truly a shocker. Brill story line. Amazing ending!
Disadvantages: none what so ever
...expect. I have never seen the film but i have read some of Herbert other work before so i had some idea. It only took me a few days to read as i was hooked and couldnt put it down. Herbert presented the main character Holman extreamly well as, through out the book i felt connected to him and felt sorry for all this poor man was going through. Most scenes were very grusome and gory but it all added to the effect. Buliding towards a brillent ending. ... ...other than Holman himself, how the fog had effected them and thier life in short parragraphs and then going straight back to the main story. James Herbert books were introduced to me by my mum and since then i read them all the time. The fog as one of my favouites. Its a bit spooky thinking of the way the fog had effected peopled minds. The killings were amazingly detailed which helped paint a particlular picture. This is an amazing book. A true ...

Excellent...better than his more famous rivals???
Review of Slugs - Shaun Hutson by
LARocker182
Advantages: Excellently written and unputdownable!
Disadvantages: Some may find it a little too gory in places!
...Although the concept of killer slugs is somewhat hard to grasp, "they are small and squirmy...how scary can they be", the actual book is excellent. Shaun Hutson is an excellent horror writer and if you've been reading the likes of Stephen King, James Herbert, and Dean Koontz, then you've missed one out and need to discover Shaun Hutson. His writing style is so much clearer than that of Stephen King for example who I sometimes find to be a bit rambling ... ...You must remember that this book is somewhat classic horror now following in the style of The Rats and Night of The Crabs, if you loved these of indeed like 80s horror then this is a must read as it stands the test of time and you almost forget its age and could mistake it for a newer publication.
Also a quick work of warning this book is not for the faint hearted as Shaun Hutson's graphic horror scenes are just that GRAPHIC they leave little to ...

A jolly warped read
Review of Abarat - Clive Barker by
DolphinWatcher30
Advantages: An excellent & imaginative story
Disadvantages: Waiting for the next book
As a children's story this is some seriously dark writing and may not be suitable of younger readers, but for adults it's an exceptionally good read. The heroine of the story, Candy, finds herself pulled into a parallel world by a strange sea, a world that consists of 25 islands. 24 islands represent a particular hour of the day with the 25th a dark place of murder and madness. This initial volume sees Candy's travels around a selection of these ... ...trying to stay out of arms reach of the dark servants of the Lord of the 25th hour. This is a place where friend and foe are never what they seem and many are out for the capture of Candy.
The illustrations included in this book give it an extra and enjoyably warped depth. Clive Barkers visual take on his fantasy world is one where even the good-guys can be seen as ugly monstrosities.
You'll definitely want to read the next instalment. ...
