Crikley Hall
Review of The Secret of Crickley Hall - James Herbert by DancingKate

Advantages: Keeps you guessing till the end
Disadvantages: none

...ill over Xmas it was the perfect tonic and excuse to stay in bed. A book well worth reading with the usual brilliance expected from the author. The beginning of the story has so many possibilities that you are kept guessing as to what could be occurring within Crickley Hall to cause the weirdness. There is a vast array of characters and depending upon your view of life it will be a personal choice as to whom the lead character within the novel ... Read review

Trashy Classic Horror
Review of Haunted - James Herbert by amylovelace

Advantages: A very easy read - with an unexpected twist!
Disadvantages: A bit cheesy - especially the film

This is a classic scary story... it was the first I read by James Herbert and it got me hooked! It is a trashy horror - a nice easy read - but I wouldn't reccommend reading it alone in bed! It's so good that a film was made based on this book - film is a bit cheesy! It can be very frightening in parts - but if you are already a fan you will expect this. It is like one of those ghost stories you hear - that you are not sure whether to believe ... Read review

AMAZING!
Review of The Fog - James Herbert by xxxbabixxx

Advantages: Truly a shocker. Brill story line. Amazing ending!
Disadvantages: none what so ever

...expect. I have never seen the film but i have read some of Herbert other work before so i had some idea. It only took me a few days to read as i was hooked and couldnt put it down. Herbert presented the main character Holman extreamly well as, through out the book i felt connected to him and felt sorry for all this poor man was going through. Most scenes were very grusome and gory but it all added to the effect. Buliding towards a brillent ending. ...
...other than Holman himself, how the fog had effected them and thier life in short parragraphs and then going straight back to the main story. James Herbert books were introduced to me by my mum and since then i read them all the time. The fog as one of my favouites. Its a bit spooky thinking of the way the fog had effected peopled minds. The killings were amazingly detailed which helped paint a particlular picture. This is an amazing book. A true ... Read review

SQUISHED
Review of Brainchild - John Saul by Coppertop

Advantages: Good storyline, interesting characters
Disadvantages: Nothing comes to mind

Reading has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, starting with Enid Blyton stories as a youngster and progressing through to the teenage horror novels. As a teen, a horror novel was only good if it grossed me out! Does anyone remember reading the early James Herbert stories such as The Rats and The Fog? I couldn’t read these now because I’m much more squeamish and prefer psychological horror to the blatant ‘blood and guts’ that I ...
...point you may well ask? Well, the reason I’ve mentioned these early stories is because I believe I made a natural progression to John Saul and then Stephen King; both authors seem to rely on psychological thrills rather than the blood and guts of old. This was the eighth novel written by John Saul according to what I’ve discovered. Some of his earlier work includes “Suffer The Children” and “All Fall Down”. ***Brainchild*** “La Paloma was once ... A jolly warped read
Review of Abarat - Clive Barker by DolphinWatcher30

Advantages: An excellent & imaginative story
Disadvantages: Waiting for the next book

As a children's story this is some seriously dark writing and may not be suitable of younger readers, but for adults it's an exceptionally good read. The heroine of the story, Candy, finds herself pulled into a parallel world by a strange sea, a world that consists of 25 islands. 24 islands represent a particular hour of the day with the 25th a dark place of murder and madness. This initial volume sees Candy's travels around a selection of these ...
...trying to stay out of arms reach of the dark servants of the Lord of the 25th hour. This is a place where friend and foe are never what they seem and many are out for the capture of Candy. The illustrations included in this book give it an extra and enjoyably warped depth. Clive Barkers visual take on his fantasy world is one where even the good-guys can be seen as ugly monstrosities. You'll definitely want to read the next instalment. ... Read review
