Crickley Hall - More like Creepy Hall.
Review of The Secret of Crickley Hall - James Herbert by Maximus-Qualitus

Advantages: Simply Fantastic read
Disadvantages: None

The Secret of Crickley Hall. James Herbert. When writing a book review I sometimes put to much plot, so this time I am going to try and get the balance right with this review. I bought this book a while back, picked it up and put it down. I thought it would be a ghost story that I wouldnt like. Well I was right and I was wrong. Whilst it is a ghost story, it is in a class of its own. An extrodinary written ghost story which grips you from the ...
...I was wrong, I loved the book ! The book begins with Herberts usual fantastic discriptive talents, setting Crickley Hall clearly in the readers mind. The narrative between the characters is superbly written and Herbert gives various chapters to each character showing the story from their points of view. The pace of the book is not racey but that doesn't distract from the creeping horror hidden within the house and within the story. It is a Friday ... Read review

Magic Cottage - Not So Magical For Me
Review of The Magic Cottage - James Herbert by purplifried

Advantages: It's By James Herbert
Disadvantages: Quite Frustrating

...well, telling you all about the 2 main characters, Mike and Midge (her real name is Margaret). They both live in the 'big city' but want a slower paced life in the countryside to help with their work. Mike is a musician and Midge is an artist. After a lot of searching they finally agree on a beautiful, yet rundown cottage in the middle of nowhere. On first viewings of the cottage Mike finds an awful lot wrong with it and gets the builders in, but ...
...animals that like to visit the 'magic' cottage, there are two main characters here also, a little bird and a little squirrel (Rumbo), there are various other animals who also like to visit. As the story proceeds we learn more about Mike and Midge's relationship and how their talents flourish while living in the cottage, paintings coming to life, music flowing beautifully, etc. There is however something in the attic, but I will not spoil this for ... James Herbert - The Ghosts of Sleath.
Review of The Ghosts of Sleath - James Herbert by Sammy45999

Advantages: Plenty of twists and turns, and surprises. An easy imaginable place.
Disadvantages: Very Similar too many of his others novels.

...of James Herberts Books. The Ghosts of Sleath was a very good read but not unlike his others works. If you enjoyed The Magic Cottage, Once and Nobody True then you'll love it! Its not quite as fast and compelling to read as '48. But it takes the place of the awful films they put on now adays. The story continues from James Herberts 'The Haunted'. It takes the Story of David Ash a Psychical reserchers on from his meeting at Edbrook house, and how ...
...rises for him to find the turth once again for the village of Sleath. When David Ash Arrives at the village of Sleath and automatically feels the burden that holds this Village, the truth evades him, and sends me all over the village looking for the Truth. With shocking accidents as the villagers are slowy affected by their surrounding! A very good read and an interesting look into Ghosts and their haunting, espeically after some of his other views. ... Read review

Fairies are real...
Review of Once - James Herbert by amylovelace

Advantages: Great if you are a kid at heart
Disadvantages: Don't bother reading it if you lack imagination

If you still believe in fairies (myself admitted) then you must read this book! This book has some poor reviews but I really liked it - then again I am a kid at heart! I am a big fan of James Herbert but I generally don't read best-sellers - this time I made an exception - after I read the blurb i just had to have it!!! It mixes horror with fantasy: including witches / goblins / fairies etc... If you are scared of spiders you should be warned ...
...probably give you nightmares for years to come (as it did me). You should also be warned (although you may expect it if you are an avid James Herbert fan) of the sexual content... it was very strange!!! The only thing that made this book hard to read was that I had to keep throwing it to the floor when it got too scary! ... Read review

Gruesome crime solving type novel
Review of Nobody true - James Herbert by amylovelace

Advantages: Unusual body / soul possessions etc
Disadvantages: Quite slow and boring at the beginning

This is a Shaun Hutson type gruesome horror. It starts off quite slow and boring... like a crime novel - trying to solve the mystery behind a murder. The unusual thing is that the detective is the murdered victim! Half-way through, the book it gets really twisted and has a very original storyline - involving possesion of dead bodies! It is a bit like watching a horror movie. You follow the main character, deceased, who sees people getting killed ...
...scream at characters in a horror movie "don't answer the front door" etc, you will scream the same thing at people in the book! It is compelling... you constantly want to know what is going to happen next. You may also, inadvertently, become attached to the murderer and sympathise with him/her in the end - at least I did! The mystery behind the killers reasoning is quite sad and tear-jerking! It is an unusual type of story for James Herbert... ... Read review
