Damn Vermin!
Advantages: Short novel, ideal for a first introduction to Herbert Disadvantages: None worth mentioning.
...and I never really felt the urge to follow suit. I detoured to Stephen King and Dean Koontz along the way and have finally, just finished my first James Herbert book at the grand old age of 34.
In London in the seventies, Harris, an art teacher at a secondary school, is enjoying life. He loves his job and knows there are a few boys in his class that he could actually make a difference to. He has a steady girlfriend who he lives with and having grown ... ...to his hand. Harris takes the boy to hospital, encountering a maniacal mother in the emergency room, whose baby has just been mutilated by giant black rats! Keogh, the young boy with the rat bite to his hand, dies within 24 hours from a disease brought on by the bite, a disease that would normally only make the sufferer ill for a few days and then be on the mend.
More and more deadly giant rat attacks are announced along with many cases of people ...

The softer side of Herbert.
Advantages: A good introduction Disadvantages: A little mild for Herbert
...and gore, but brilliant just the same.
This is story that shows you sometimes the most beautiful things can also be the most terrifying.
When moving to a beautiful run down cottage in the country in order to escape the hussle and bussle of city life, Midge and Mike thought they had found their haven, Wild animals on the door step, love and creativity.
But in true Herbert style things aren't as they seem, the neighbours are a little strange to ...

The Secret of Crickley Hall.
Advantages: FANTASTIC READ Disadvantages: NOTHING
The Secret of Crickley Hall.
We begin the book at Crickley Hall and right from the start you can feel that this place is a troubled place, a place of great unhappiness and evil.
The book initially centres around the family Caleigh. Father Gabe, his wife Eve and their two daughters Cally and Loren. They have an unhappy past, there should have been a son, Cameron, who disappeared one day and has never been seen since.
This ... ...to terrifying!
Located in the Devils Gorge in Devon and seemingly always shrouded by rain and chilling mists, Crickley Hall is a grim and awful place. Why Gabe would go there with his family is the only fault to the story this book has.
The house holds dark secrets revolving aound starvation, torture, child abuse and murder.
Now that the Caleigh family has taken up residence the house comes to life or rather tries to bring death to its inhabitants.

Dog/Man or Man/Dog
Advantages: Not a scarey horror storey Disadvantages: You might ned to read twice to grasp
A different, thinkers horror book. Probably in the Horror Genre because of the author and and his earlier books. Dated now but does stand the test of time
A relatively short book compared to some other horror writers but no less a good book. It is different and starts you thinking from page one.
Then undertake the trek of a man to recover his life only to find out he is a dog. Or the trek of a dog to regain his life as a man.
It is difficult to ... ...but is this dog a man or is this man a dog. Suffice to say he has 4 legs and barks so why should he think like a man and as soon as he realises who is is(was) then why is he a dog???????
Re-incarnation it might not be but this dog has a grudge so don't take his bone.
Go to your local library and borrow the book. ...

Fairies are real...
Advantages: Great if you are a kid at heart Disadvantages: Don't bother reading it if you lack imagination
If you still believe in fairies (myself admitted) then you must read this book!
This book has some poor reviews but I really liked it - then again I am a kid at heart!
I am a big fan of James Herbert but I generally don't read best-sellers - this time I made an exception - after I read the blurb i just had to have it!!!
It mixes horror with fantasy: including witches / goblins / fairies etc...
If you are scared of spiders you should be warned ... ...probably give you nightmares for years to come (as it did me).
You should also be warned (although you may expect it if you are an avid James Herbert fan) of the sexual content... it was very strange!!!
The only thing that made this book hard to read was that I had to keep throwing it to the floor when it got too scary! ...
