The softer side of Herbert.
Review of The Magic Cottage - James Herbert by
carla33
Advantages: A good introduction
Disadvantages: A little mild for Herbert
...and gore, but brilliant just the same.
This is story that shows you sometimes the most beautiful things can also be the most terrifying.
When moving to a beautiful run down cottage in the country in order to escape the hussle and bussle of city life, Midge and Mike thought they had found their haven, Wild animals on the door step, love and creativity.
But in true Herbert style things aren't as they seem, the neighbours are a little strange to ...

Crikley Hall
Review of The Secret of Crickley Hall - James Herbert by
DancingKate
Advantages: Keeps you guessing till the end
Disadvantages: none
...ill over Xmas it was the perfect tonic and excuse to stay in bed.
A book well worth reading with the usual brilliance expected from the author. The beginning of the story has so many possibilities that you are kept guessing as to what could be occurring within Crickley Hall to cause the weirdness.
There is a vast array of characters and depending upon your view of life it will be a personal choice as to whom the lead character within the novel ...

Scare youyr pants off stuff
Review of The Dark - James Herbert by
carla33
Advantages: Brilliant scare
Disadvantages: You'll never want to turn the lights off again
You'll never turn the lights off again!!!
If you are a true horror lover, then this is the best one to read, you will never look at shadows the same way again.
In true Herbert style this one really does keep you on the edge of your seat.
Children that set fire to their parents, in mates killing attendents. the whole human race going nuts over the dark.
If the dark was an entity would it really be this bad, I hope not. Scary stuff, probably one ...

The Jonah
Review of The Jonah - James Herbert by
Stuart_aspey_woohoo
Advantages: Short Gripping Read
Disadvantages: A Bit outdated and cliche'd
The Jonah is a very well written novel by James Herbert, though it is eclipsed by his earlier work, especially The Rats, The Lair and The Domain (The Rats Trilogy), The Jonah is a complete and engrossing book. It has dated over the years, as James' use of words and descriptive prowess has grown to such a capacity that I am waiting at his website to find out when the next book is due to be released, but this does not take anything away from it's power ... ...out, Kelso is removed from the police. He then takes a journey to find out why these things are happening to him and in the process finds love and a part of him he thought never enev existed.
If You like this and other James Herbert novels, I would suggest you look for By Horror Haunted - edited by Stephen Jones and James Herbert's Dark Places as they are great insightful books.
I'll be totally frank about this though. I really need to re-read ...

Damn Vermin!
Review of The Rats - James Herbert by
wendybull
Advantages: Short novel, ideal for a first introduction to Herbert
Disadvantages: None worth mentioning.
...and I never really felt the urge to follow suit. I detoured to Stephen King and Dean Koontz along the way and have finally, just finished my first James Herbert book at the grand old age of 34.
In London in the seventies, Harris, an art teacher at a secondary school, is enjoying life. He loves his job and knows there are a few boys in his class that he could actually make a difference to. He has a steady girlfriend who he lives with and having grown ... ...to his hand. Harris takes the boy to hospital, encountering a maniacal mother in the emergency room, whose baby has just been mutilated by giant black rats! Keogh, the young boy with the rat bite to his hand, dies within 24 hours from a disease brought on by the bite, a disease that would normally only make the sufferer ill for a few days and then be on the mend.
More and more deadly giant rat attacks are announced along with many cases of people ...
