I enjoyed this book because it scared me. It even gave me nightmares that stopped me from reading it for a few days. For me that is the mark of a good horror story, it made me think and it made me scared. Although I will probably read the book again, I have decieded to not watch the movie as I think I will find that too scary. The way in which King builds the story up and makes your use your own imagination is perfect as different parts of the story ...
...America is very clever as it puts the reader in a sense of security that is even more terrifying. I am not normally a fan of the vampire genre but this is one of those that for me manages to cross the line from stereotypical bore, to scary gore. My advice is if you like King then read this, even if vampires are not your thing. ... Read review

Advantages: An excellent & imaginative story
Disadvantages: Waiting for the next book

As a children's story this is some seriously dark writing and may not be suitable of younger readers, but for adults it's an exceptionally good read. The heroine of the story, Candy, finds herself pulled into a parallel world by a strange sea, a world that consists of 25 islands. 24 islands represent a particular hour of the day with the 25th a dark place of murder and madness. The illustrations included in this book give it an extra and enjoyably warped depth. Clive Barkers visual take on his fantasy world is one where even the good-guys can be seen as ugly monstrosities.
