Don't Lose Out!
Review of Lord Loss (The Demonata) - Darren Shan by Borg

Advantages: Easy to read, hard to put down, gripping, thrilling
Disadvantages: None

...he must face the demon Lord Loss. I am probably being vague here, but I do not want to give much more away as that will spoil it for readers. At 200 or so pages this is just right. I feel there is far too much padding in adult books at the moment. And reading Lord Loss has made me feel surprised just at how good kids' fiction is. I have read the Harry Potter books, like most adults, but it did not cross my mind to read other works written for children. ...
...is quite graphic. There are no holds barred here and the author gets away with a lot of stuff. Death, blood, gore… But it is written with tongue in cheek - and with plenty of sick humour that did surprise me. The style is straight to the point. And very well written at that! Darren Shan is English born, real surname O'Shaughnessy. His first book, 'Ayuamarca,' was published in 1999, but did not sell well. This was an adult work, and it is his subsequent ... Read review

A Koontz Powerhouse
Review of Lightning - Dean Koontz by awaykitcom

Advantages: A smooth read
Disadvantages: ADDICTIVE!

...deliberately vague as possible. Lightning is, quite simply, one of Koontz best books. The pace is just right, the action is used perfectly and written with skill and restraint. The charachters are brought to life extremely well. Similar stories have been written before but none quite like this. The twists and turns are well thought out and the plot is without any big holes. Then, to top it all off, is a stunning twist to rival The Sixth Sense. ... Read review

Clearly a modern King, rather than an old classic
Review of Lisey's Story - Stephen King by emilywhite

Advantages: A good read. You learn a lot about Lisey's life, past and present
Disadvantages: Leaves you feeling disappointed.

Another new title from Stephen King. Despite owning almost every single Stephen King title, I can't help but feel a little underwhelmed when each new title appears on the shelf. Unlike the classics of yesteryear, recent titles have been disappointing - the Stephen King quirkiness is present without quite the same spark. The premise is centred around Lisey Landon, the recent widow of famous author Scott Landon. She still lives alone and is finding ...
...decides it is about time to clear out Scott's study which, until now, has been left virtually untouched. What follows is a mixture of flashbacks to both Scott's early childhood, and also the shared experiences during their marriage. As per usual, there is a supernatural air to all of this. You also learn more about Lisey and her family, though this seems like a slightly awkward way to reach the conclusion (which I shan't spoil!) All in all, a good ... Read review

Not so Brite
Review of Lost Souls - Poppy Z. Brite by Emma1973

Advantages: slightly erotic
Disadvantages: shallow, cliched, boring story, weak characters

...who make up the band Lost Souls? who Nothing runs away to, bumping into Zillah on the way. Ghost is a psychic whos gran was a famous sorceress, I'm sure Brite intended him to play a huge goodie part in the book, but it never comes off, Steve is just his drunk friend pining over Ann his lost girlfriend who unfortunately got knocked up by Zillah. And thats the characters, they interact along the book, you get the feeling that Ghost is supposed to save ...
...Carmilla by J Sheridan Le Fanu. In short dont go out of your way to buy it unless you also find it for 50p in a charity shop. Failing that e-mail me your address and I'll give it to you!! Poppy Z Brite. Lost Souls. Penguin Books 1992 ... Read review
