Gruesome crime solving type novel

Advantages: Unusual body / soul possessions etc
Disadvantages: Quite slow and boring at the beginning

This is a Shaun Hutson type gruesome horror. It starts off quite slow and boring... like a crime novel - trying to solve the mystery behind a murder. The unusual thing is that the detective is the murdered victim! Half-way through, the book it gets really twisted and has a very original storyline - involving possesion of dead bodies! It is a bit like watching a horror movie. You follow the main character, deceased, who sees people getting killed ...
...scream at characters in a horror movie "don't answer the front door" etc, you will scream the same thing at people in the book! It is compelling... you constantly want to know what is going to happen next. You may also, inadvertently, become attached to the murderer and sympathise with him/her in the end - at least I did! The mystery behind the killers reasoning is quite sad and tear-jerking! It is an unusual type of story for James Herbert... ...

Needful review!!

Advantages: Perfect for those long winter evenings by the fire
Disadvantages: a few small cliches

Im sorry, but this will probably be a very long review. I dont know about other people, But my opinion of a book changes throughout, since I get to know the characters, and understand the authors style of thinking and writing. Therefore, this review is written over a large period. As a huge fan of horror novels, and the films based on the novels of Stephen King, I thought it was about time I actually read one of them. It does, however, mean that ...
...the dramas and films. I acquired 'needful things' just a few days ago, and Ive not been able to put it down! With every sentence and paragraph I read I'm being drawn in further, into the ever increasingly conspiratorial plot of the book. Set in Castle Rock - a small village (the typical place to find people set in their ways) A small cliche that can be overlooked...perhaps?! Whats the last thing a small village full of set-in-their-way people ...

Do your dreamscapes feature this?

Advantages: Varied collection of short stories, plus a few surprises!
Disadvantages: Some stories a little confusing

A hefty book of classic King story-telling starts here...this is a collection of stories of the macabre, the murderous and some that just make you think long into the night...sweet dreams, my lovelies! STRUCTURE: The book starts with an introduction from King discussing his childhood feelings from reading horror stories, and the feelings that accompanied the creation of the stories to follow in the novel. It's an interesting read, with many points ...
...whatever you are told as a young child...anyone who says otherwise is either a child prodigy in my eyes, or has no imagination at all! ;p Next up is the actual anthology of 21 short stories plus an essay written on Little League baseball (which his son played) and a short poem also covering baseball. Concluding the book is a series of notes describing each piece of work featured in turn- how they came about and other interesting nuggets of information...an ...

Night in the Lonesome October

Advantages: Flows nicely right from the start
Disadvantages: Ending came too soon

I've read many of Laymons books, and this was a recent purchase which I'm glad I made. The story is all about a college boy, who, due to events in his love life, turn him to the 'thrills' (and dangers!) of wandering the streets late at night...... I could have easily read it one sitting, as its hard to put down. I wont give any of the story away, but its well worth a read. Very typical of Laymons style with good character descriptions, so you ...

Advantages: Excellent idea for a novel, villain is a twisted character.
Disadvantages: Very violent, poorly characterised and roughly written

Paul Annendale is taking his annual vacation from the rat race to the town of Black River. Visiting this backwater town he begins to notice that many of the residents are suffering from horrific nightmares nicknamed "Night Chills". He begins to wonder why only he, his children and his friends Sam and Jenny are unaffected. His concerns are enhanced when. start acting very strangely following the visit of a Sociologist. What link does this Sociologist ...
...out of character? "Night Chills" uses the superb premise of subliminal advertising being used for mind control to draw the reader in. The reality of subliminal advertising is scary enough but the idea of them being as a form of total control is terrifying. Imagine having no control as someone tells you to drive a fork through your hand and smile while doing so! This very real fear of subliminal advertising does exist as Koontz explains in his foreword. ...
