Great Balls of Fire Advantages: So apt for our current climate change Disadvantages: Don't read it at bedtime, the night will pass quickly, and you'll still be reading when it's time to goto work ...over evil. In Portent the world is a changing place, unexplained phenomena are occuring all over with disasterous results for the humans living on this planet, but as Herbert says the planet is trying to heal itself. Mixed in to the storyline are a set of gypsy twins, Mama Pitie a dark and foreboding figure hell bent on getting to the twins, James Rivers a Doctor working for the NOAA (National Oceananic and Atmospheric Administration, The Dream Man ... ...Diane, Father and Daughter who aid James while he unravels what exactly is happening. I whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in what is happening now to our planet it's so apt, and although it may be pure fantasy it's amazing how James Herbert wrote about, what we are only now experiencing. ... Oh!...Gods!! Advantages: The eighth book of Garretts adventures Disadvantages: Getting hold of copies Garrett is in trouble with the Gods. The Gods themselves are in trouble Garrett is content not to worry about the Gods if they will return the favour and not worry about him. But these Gods are in trouble. The Street of the Gods can only hold so many temples and places of worship. A cult can have thousands of followers but if it is not on The Street of the Gods then it is nothing important. With all the new peoples flooding into TunFaire there ... ...space for the newer gods. That means that some are going to go. Two rival pantheons are both looking for the key to a temple. Masterful! Advantages: It's jsut brilliant Disadvantages: None Phantoms is the pinnacle of Koontz' horror writing. A woman and her younger sister arrive home at the small town where they live, up in the mountains, and find that everyone has vanished. From that creepy starting point, Koontz brilliantly up the suspense and the terror right through to a massive and very satisfying climax. I love Phantoms for many reasons. It moves along at a pace that keeps you in suspense but doesn't leave you frustrated. Introducing ... ...tingling, espescially if you are having a late night reading session on your own. I have to stay awake, I have to stay awake Advantages: Scary, cannot put the book down, very easy read! Disadvantages: Scary, couldn't sleep :) I bought this book last summer before going on holiday. I always go out and find at least four books to take away with me - holidays are usually the only time that I have to read for pleasure. I had never read anything by Graham Masterton and if it were not for the special deal that Makro were doing (three books for £5) I would probably gone for a Stephen King or Dean Koontz book. As this deal was so very good I chose three books from a limited selection, ... ...back of the book sounded okay, nothing special - even a bit over the top, so it was not one of the first books that I read when I arrived in Cyprus. However, when its turn came I found myself unable to put this book down! Yes the story was unbelievable and yet it gave me nightmares. I'm 23 and I was scared to turn off the light! No don't laugh, you may only laugh once you have read the book - and I guarantee you won't be laughing at the end of it. ... whynotsneeze Advantages: inventive, evocative Disadvantages: can it be sustained in other books? This book was suggested to me as a good read in the cyberpunk mode, but to place in that category is to miss the richness of Noon's world. There are nods to cyberpunk, but as many to magic realism. You put the book down and feel you have been exposed to a genuinely inventive mind. I see little value in recounting the plot other than to say that its set in a Manchester of the future (but seems to be imbued with the Madchester of the recent past) and ... ...conceits are nothing short of deviant, yet the writing is such that they are not sensationalized - there is a strong subtext of tolerance at work here. I'm tempted to suggest it's an acid-fuelled trip but that puts it with a lot of substandard nonsense that come out in the past decade and its too focused for that. The reservation I have concerns not the book itself but the extensibility of Noon's world.
