The Skeleton Detective
Advantages: The whole story Disadvantages: It had to end...
Detective Skulduggery Pleasant has been dead for hundreds of years. But he's been alive for longer. Stephanie, blissfully unaware of her elemental magical powers, lives her boring life in a small seaside village, longing for a spark of excitement. When her Uncle dies she inherits his grand house, to the disbelief of her other Uncle and Aunt. At the funeral and the reading of the will she encounters a mysterious character - Skulduggery Pleasant. Because ... ...into her (recently inherited) house. Skulduggery comes to her rescue and begins an action-packed relationship of investigation and comical violence against the dark lord Nefarian Serpine. Slowly, Stephanie gets introduced into the hidden world of magic, and learns to use her own powers. I discovered this book by a school event, where I had a choice of good books. However, Skulduggery stood out because I had heard of it before, but never read it. ...

THE GOD OF 'STRANGE'
Advantages: Easily read short stories Disadvantages: A bit 'out there'
...took a route unknown, a strange highway, again for reasons unknown. The route he should have taken has now been torn down; it now belongs to a super highway that replaced it. So how, on his way home, is he sitting opposite this road that doesn’t exist? And why does he have a strong feeling that if he now takes this route his life could be put right, put back on the road to happiness?
This story is all about putting things right, and what events ... ...how you would feel if one day you are catapulted back twenty years and you are having a conversation with someone you knew back then? The word I came up with is ‘huh?’ You would be so confused, especially if you had chosen to forget certain issues, which is exactly what has happened to the main character Shannon. Time and willpower has allowed him to forget, or bury, some things which should have haunted him.
The writing gently leads you into one ...

Scarily Believable
Advantages: Fantastic plot, dark, gothic feel, good characters Disadvantages: Slightly slow to start
Set in the late 1880's, Supping With Panthers takes the reader from a remote part of India to the gas lit streets of London where the main character Dr. John Eliot returns after discovering a dark and evil secret deep in a mysteriuos Himalayan kingdom.
The main thread of the story surrounds Eliot's investigation into the murder of an associate whos blood drained body was dragged from the Thames. Interacting with characters such as Lord Byron, Oscar ... ...truth surrounding the murder and meets the seductive Lilah who is definitely more than she first seems.
The book is presented to the reader as a collection of journals, letters and papers that have been collected by Abraham Stoker to tell the story. Holland makes us believe that these events could have actually taken place with plenty of fact written into the story. The reader will learn how Bram Stoker came to write the story of Dracula and the ...

Good grief, Anne Rice!
Advantages: Good book to read if never read Anne Rice books before Disadvantages: This is a sad tale, if you are looking for happy, don't read.
This is a great book to read if you have never read an Anne Rice tale before. This story is not part of a series as is her usual style with the Vampire Chronicles and the Tales of the Mayfair Witches. It is also a great book for any Anne Rice fan, to get a new story not related to the witches or vampires. I enjoyed this book very much, as I am a very big fan of Anne's, and have read all of the vampire and witch tales. I was ready for a new story, ... ...is a very sad tale of tricks and long suffering, so those of you looking for a happy story will want to go with something else. However, if you are a horror fan, or like plot twists or detailed descriptive background stories of deceipt and trickery, not to mention ghosts and the like, then this is a book for you.
It is an excellent tale of grief and long suffering, as told by the main character in a style similar to Interview with the Vampire. If ...
