Review of Hell To Pay - Shaun Hutson by
tuftie
Advantages: Hutson back on form
Disadvantages: None
...plane/beach/at the villa/etcetera. I spotted Hell To Pay in a rack of paperbacks. I decided to give it a go. What did I have to lose? It's free to borrow from the library, so if it's rubbish; c'est la vie.
It wasn't rubbish. It was great. A return to form. A return to the good old days of sex and violence, troubled maverick coppers and underlying supernatural terror.
Here's a summary of the plot and characters: DI Alan Fielding is investigating ... ...was a nice touch.
Hell To Pay retails at £6.99, which is the going rate for a paperback. I got it out of the library for free. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes horror fiction, particularly if you enjoy urban British horror. I also recommend you join your local library. Two for one special.
Review of Hybrid - Shaun Hutson by
atticusuk
Advantages: Entertaining with a good twist to the end
Disadvantages: None really
...their opinion were better and Hybrid was one of those so I took the plunge.
When I got the book I was a bit worried about the cover as if I had seen this on a bookshelf I would have assumed it was a horror story and left it well alone however the reviewer and the blurb on the back suggested something different so I switched all the lights on in the house (just incase) and started to read. It was only after I finished the book that I noticed it does ... ...the case I would say it is at the mild end of the horror spectrum.
The Plot
The plot evolves around one single character, a once famous writer Christopher Ward whose career is very much in decline. He leads a solitary life in a rather large house struggling with periods of writers block as he struggles to write his latest novel. Increasingly he seeks to find comfort in alcohol and the occasional sexual encounter with a prostitute other than that ...

nothing original, been done better
Review of Knife Edge - Shaun Hutson by
dazzagaelic
Advantages: Easy to read
Disadvantages: No suspense, dull characters
...to get into. Knife edge is a reasonably common thriller, set over the period of one day. An ex-para Neville finding hard to believe that peace is iminent in Northern Ireland, threatens to set off several bombs in London with a gap of 1 hour between each unless he is given his daughter in the custody of his ex-wife. Doyle (very similar to the character of Gibbs in Lethal Weapon and even has the dead wife thing going on) is a counter-terrorist expert ... ...bombs go off. Not surprising he is always close to getting him but always misses out and so this goes on for the majority of the book. Of course some of the bombs go off but Doyle gets him in the end.
I was very disapointed with this book as I quite enoyed Renegade (in which the character Doyle first appeared, I think)
but the character of Doyle hasn't progressed at all and the other characters in this book where just awful, and I just didn't feel ...

Compulsion is Compulsive reading
Review of Compulsion - Shaun Hutson by
budge
Advantages: A book that grips you form the inside
Disadvantages: Do not turn out the lights
Yes......Yes.......Yes.......Yes...... Oh my goodness this man has done it to me again. He just taken me into another world.
This man I talk about in unfortunately not my husband, he is the next best thing. Shaun Hutson writer extraodinaire!! From the title to the last quote in the book I felt under a spell.
You do not realise that it is a book that you are reading, as some of the things that happen in this story do happen in reality.
It all starts ... ...and Graham Brown.
Carl is the oldest of the group and Donna idolises him. Donna wil do anything he asks her to do. Graham is the follower of the pack and is dominated by Carl.
These three along with others are running riot in the streets of the overcrowded council estate that they all live in. They are commiting burglary, theft, vandolism and car break ins. They are all under the age of 18 so they are terrorising the residents knowing that the ...

Dead and almost forgotten
Review of Dying Words - Shaun Hutson by
britum2000
Advantages: Another Shaun Hutson book.
Disadvantages: Another Shaun Hutson book!
...always fulsome and those for Dying Words were no exception. In them he admits to having writer's block for some time and reveals that a chance conversation with a friend gave him the idea for his latest offering. A newly inspired Shaun Hutson! My curiousity was aroused, so I delved in.
Before I begin, a few words of caution are necessary about Shaun Hutson and his writing style, especially if you are new to the author. Hutson is a formula writer; ... ...So there you are, Dying Words is a locked room mystery thriller with the usual Hutson bad taste thrown in for good measure. He is certainly never going to win the Booker Prize but his schlock horror efforts will guarantee a healthy bank balance. If you want an undemanding read with cheap thrills, try it. Then again, there are some great authors out there, crying out to be read.
The copy I picked up was a hardback, published by Orbit books at a cost ...
