Winter isolation

Advantages: Well written
Disadvantages: American heroes

...of chiller-thriller writers. Winter Moon tells the story of a policeman (Jake) and his family who live in Los Angeles. After Jake is involved in an horrific gun fight whilst out on patrol, he and his family face the long haul back to financial and emotional security. Meanwhile Eduardo, the father of Jake’s old partner Tommy (who was killed in another gun fight), is facing a fight all of his own, one that is infinitely weirder than anything Jake ...
...will prove to be a fight to the death. This spells a brief period of good luck for Jake and his family, as after Eduardo’s death, they get to inherit a fabulous ranch in Montana and decide to move there to get away from the dangers of life in LA. Little do they know, just how dangerous life can be in Montana. And so starts a frightening tale of terror and isolation, but also of courage and bravery. In some ways this book is typical of a lot of ...

My Mother Loved World War Z, and She's an Old Woman

Advantages: Brilliant
Disadvantages: Gory

...to shake everyone in the world into action against global stupidity and naivete. It also makes me want to board my doors and windows, and destroy the staircase behind me. I loved this book so much that, despite the horrible violence it depicts, the terror and the hopelessness, I let my mother read it. She loved it, too, somehow. ...

How can such a Godless World be so fantastic?

Advantages: A different style to the usual fantasy fayre, intriguing characters over a majestic landscape.
Disadvantages: Slow introduction means some perserverance is required.

...skilled and merciless Inkallim? Winterbirth by Brian Ruckley has a lot to live up to. Favourably compared by various critics to epics such as Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" and Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series, this is a novel that really needs to live up to its hype. In a highly competitive fantasy genre it is difficult even for the most seasoned writer to compete. The fact this is Ruckley's debut novel makes Winterbirth an even more important ...
...schemer or tolerant wife. In Winterbirth many of the strongest, most aggressive characters are women. By using various races and creeds Ruckley can show a variety of viewpoints and in my cases this means traditionally weaker characters leading the field. Again, this is a pleasant departure in a genre that could often be accused of becoming stagnant. It is the sign of a good fantasy writer when you are completely lost in the story. The testament ...

Whispers

Advantages: Its Dean Koontz! what more?
Disadvantages: Not really his usual style, but not unusal.

The plot : Screenwriter, Hilary Thomas, is confronted in her own home by an intruder named Bruno Frye. It seems that Mr. Frye has been stalking Ms. Thomas in the belief that Ms. Thomas is his dead mother, Katherine, who has come back from the dead in order to kill him. He must kill her, before she kills him. Of course, Hilary has no idea why Frye has singled her out. She is only aware his murderous intent, and she is very afraid. On Frye's first ...
...Frye does not. Thinking she is now safe, as Frye was apparently dead, she is shocked when he, yet again, confronts her. Why this is happening, will keep the reader turning the pages. Some of it is predictable, but still its an absorbing, easy read. Deans brilliant way of giving character depth means that with this book the reader, well i certainly did, feels for all the characters both good and evil. The books main point is to show how differently ...

The city of TunFaire is situated on a river. With all the necessary docks and port facilities for trade. The upper city is described as The Hill. This is the preserve of the upper class. Well to do merchants, The magic users (who have the money to buy the silver that powers magic). This is a clean peaceful area. The private armies keep it so. There is the street of the Gods, where all the major religions and cults have a temple. You're nobody unless ...
...Garrett knows to his regret that ALL the gods are real, just not very nice. Then there are the other areas. Places where the ordinary citizens try to live and work. Areas where the other races tend to congregate. Such as Dwarves, Elves, Trolls etc. There are of course the half breeds, quarter breeds and persons with lesser amounts of non human blood in them. Some of these races were created by the magicians of old. The others came about because ...
