HORSE RACING IN BRITAIN

The horse racing industry is often misconcepted as being expensive and puts animal cruelty on the line. However, media interest from groups such as Animal Aid has heightened this conception over the past few years and the levels of attendances have been down since the middle of this decade.
Horse racing is a risky sport, in fact the most dangerous in the world for a sportsman but there are many rules and regulations in place to stop the sport from taking the lives of both the horse and human competitors but accidents do happen.
Animal Aid actually record on their website the deaths of all the horses in the UK which I personally believe is not information the public want to know.
I am currently conducting a survey on the price of racing and of other sports particularly football. Racing is actually not as expensive as football for a days out when including admission, catering, parking and a programme. However, football is a 'tribe' sport and people go every week to defend their teams honour whether they win or lose. Horse racing has many stars but they all have a shelf life and it is hard to follow a horse, rider or trainer in a lifetime. This is a particular problem in flat racing as the horses are only around for a season at times.
Many find a day at the races confusing with the different betting options and even admission options. Below is a link to the British Horseracing Authority's website where they is a comprehensive guide to a day out at the races.

Horse racing is a good day out for the whole family as children under 16 usually get in free except for big meetings and at many meetings their are extra free activities for children. There are occassionally extra entertainments for adults such as the ever popular music night particularly at Newmarket where the like of Girls Aloud and Boyzone have played this year.

Horse racing is also cheaper for hospitality options and as a season ticket. Most racecourses offer membership that allows entry to all their meetings in a year and this is good value for money.

Go on take the plunge and go horse racing for a day, I promise you will enjoy it and go again.....

Racing is not just about the gambling aspect and I think you would be surprised if you went to a meeting aimed at family fun and saw the attractions on offer. You can now bet on all sports and children still enjoy these so what makes racing any different? As for the animal aid site, the page stated is called horse death watch and I am only aware of it because of my studies but it is well advertised in the media. I feel advertised horses' deaths is not a healthy campaign and organisation such as RSPCA put them arguments over far more constructivtly. Horses do die from other related causes such as heart problems but so do human athletes and no one deems athletics is cruel. People state horses are forced to run but no one can make half a ton of horse run if it does not want to and how many times does a fallen horse still run along with the pack? In actual fact the jockey club has nothing to do with the statistics and they are held by the BHA who only release them to welfare organisations such as the RSPCA so I am not arguing the statistics are incorrect but that in actual fact many horses die from unrelated circumstances and not in act of cruelty. The sport would not take place if horses died just for a good day out.

LOL Pete is more eloquent than me on your debate. I just feel that horse racing has a shady and corrupt element to it, as well as the points Pete makes. As for family day out, I finf that a stretch. i cant imagine any kids wanting to watch it

Oh and "Horse racing is a good day out for the whole family as children under 16 usually get in free except for big meetings and at many meetings their are extra free activities for children." - so presumably you think a good day out for children is to be surrounded by gambling and seeing the odd horse being put down... I think this needs explanation too... especially given gambling wrecks many lives. Pete
