****Story Line****
Your character is ex-detective Kyle Hyde. Hyde used to work for the NYPD. One night Hyde follows his partner, Brian Bradley, to the docks of the Houston River where he ends up putting a bullet in his chest and Bradley falls in to the water. Bradley?s body is never recovered and Hyde is kicked out of the NYPD.
Hyde suspects Bradley is still alive and takes up a job as a hired detective. He is actually a door to door salesman but his boss runs a side business locating things for people that do not to visit the police.
Go forward a couple of years and Hyde?s job takes him to Hotel Dusk where his task is to collect a couple of items left behind by a client, but it is soon evident that there is a lot more to this than meets the eye?..
Strange things are happening at Hotel Dusk. A whole host of weird people have taken a room a few days before New Years Eve 1979. Whilst they claim not to know each other they all have something in common.
****Controls & gameplay****
This game fully utilises the touch screen and stylus relationship of the DS. You move Hyde around the hotel and complete actions with the stylus and the directional pad (for right handed players) or the A, B, X and Y buttons (for left handed players) are used to scroll through the cut scenes. The DS is held sideways at all times.
Moving Hyde is simply a matter of dragging the stylus around the touch screen where you want him to go. When you come across an item to examine or a person to interact with it is simply a case of tapping an icon on the bottom left of the screen to complete the action.
To search an area you have to tap all the objects and people in that area and investigate.
There are times during the game when you need to use certain items you?ve collected on specific ?hot spots?, or even use the DS to discover something hidden. For example there are times when you have to close the DS and re-open it to ?flip? an object over and discover the secret message on the other side.
The controls really are that simple.
There are puzzles to solve, but it is not like the puzzles in Professor Layton. This game is not fast action or exciting. It uses the story to catch the attention of the game player, which is not everyone?s cup of tea.
Put simply the game relies on you walking around the hotel and interacting with all the guests. You need to remember what they said and sift the truth from the sea of lies. You get the chance to ask a specific question (from a choice of 3) and there are times when you need to ask the ?right? question to progress. Choose the wrong question and the game will come to an abrupt end, so finding the right question is key to get to the truth.
****Graphics****
All the environments are done with typical in-colour 3D. The characters are hand-drawn style of animation.
Whilst the graphics are not fantastic, they don?t really need to be and they fit in with the overall style of the game very well.
****Sound****
The audio is awful and consists of tacky background jazz music. The variety of songs is not that vast and you will hear the same tracks over and over again which gets very tedious. The music adds nothing to the game and, in my opinion is best turned off.
The dialogue with the characters in this game is displayed via text boxes and is not actually spoken. Having recorded speech would have been nice but considering the amount of conversations you will have during the game it is probably unachievable.
Text dialogue may not be such a bad thing since it gives you the opportunity to read and re-read the conversation as required, to ensure that you don?t miss anything or misinterpret any thing.
****Age range****
To enjoy this game you need to be able to read, think logically and analyse information, therefore it is not a game for younger players. My 5 year old nephew would really struggle with this, as would most children under the age of 12.
It is a game that requires concentration and is not your typical pick up, play (without thinking what you are doing) and put down sort of game.
****My opinion****
In my opinion this is an interactive crime fiction book. It is not fast paced and just seems to stroll along so if you are looking at something that is adrenaline pumping (as much as a DS game can be) and that is going to require fast reflexes then this game is definitely not for you. There are times when you will be reading lines and lines of texts for several minutes with the only movement of the stylus being a tap to move on to the next passage.
Similarly if you are looking for a puzzle game that is going to really test your mental strength, agility and reasoning then this game is not for you.
This game does get you thinking, but like you would whilst reading a book. I found myself getting sucked in by the mystery and the conspiracy, that got deeper and deeper as the game progressed, but it did take perseverance to get inside the game.
Initially, I found the long dialogues with the hotel owner and the first series of guests really, really boring. It got to the point where I was aimlessly staring at the screen and clicking the ?next? icon to rush through the text and get to the action (of which there was none). However, I did start to take note and started to enjoy the characters, their unique personalities and how they developed as the game progressed.
As you progress through the game you will find the next guest a couple of corridors or rooms away. This is a good design feature since there is no aimless wandering around the hotel looking for the guests to speak to. Other games I have played (Sims Urbz for example) does not have this feature and it gets really frustrating when you have to search out the next character, who makes it even more difficult by wandering round themselves.
Overall this is a great game, although it is not for everybody. It has a great sorry, logical puzzles, great characters (that develops as the game progresses) and good visuals.
****Price & availability****
This game can be bought from many offline and online retailers. The price appears to vary greatly and at the time of writing the cheapest it can be bought through Amazon is Ł13.98 (plus Ł1.94 P&P) from Caiman, and the most expensive through Amazon is Ł29.99 (plus Ł1.94 P&P) from Gameseek_UK.
Based on the large range of prices I would recommend doing a bit of shopping around to ensure that you get it for the best price.

Advantages: Stylish, Good Storyline Disadvantages: Hard to get into, need patience
...Overview:
To best describe Hotel Dusk you could say it is an interactive novel in which you guide the main character Kyle Hyde through a storyline that is strife with mystery and betrayal. Ingeniously, whilst playing you have to hold your DS vertically, like a book. The two screens are then cleverly split so that the left hand screen shows a first person view, while the touch screen shows a plan view of the are through which you control Hyde's movements ... ...a sleek introduction, arriving at Hotel Dusk. To start with it is a little confusing what is going on, and you wonder why you are there. However through using all of Hyde's detective skills all becomes clear as the story progresses.
In the introduction we find out about a guy named Brian Bradley (who goes by Bradley in game). This is one of Hyde's main objectives in this mystery: to try and find Bradley. Bradley is Kyle's former partner from the ...

Advantages: Very well written dialogue and story. Beautiful graphics Disadvantages: Can plod on a bit, little replay value.
Welcome to Hotel Dusk!
You play through this film noir-esq mystery/puzzle game as former police detective now dodgy salesman Kyle Hyde. During your overnight stay in room 215 you'll use all the DS functions (Touch Screen, microphone, even closing the DS at one point) to interact with other guests, explore the hotel and solve the numerous puzzles you'll come across.
The story centres around Hyde and his obsession with finding his former partner ... ...something to do with his hotel room apparently having the ability to grant wishes. He meets other guests, each with their own story for Hyde to delve into and eventually many of the guests stories interlink and help Hyde find out more about his missing partner.
The graphics are presented like an partially animated comic book, and the DS it held like a book to play. There is little animation during dialogue apart from some reactions and while walking ...

Advantages: A deep and atmospheric game Disadvantages: Possibly a bit wordy and linear in gameplay
Hotel Dusk : Room 215 is a detective and puzzle game for the Nintendo DS. It reminds me of games I used to play on the Amiga which were essentially point and click adventure games, where the game play and storyline was relatively set but gave the player lots of different options to explore the world built up by the programmers. The game appealed to me, as I'm really not that good at games which involve fighting other characters and jumping from platform ... ...them and progress takes a long time. The plot is important to the game, and you take the role of the main character, Kyle Hyde, and you have to track down your missing friend by exploring the hotel. The game is set in 1979, in Los Angeles. In terms of game play, you will have to like reading to enjoy playing this game. There is a lot of it, and it would be fair to say that the product is more of an interactive book than a game in the way that many ...
