Welcome to Hotel Dusk!
You play through this film noir-esq mystery/puzzle game as former police detective now dodgy salesman Kyle Hyde.
During your overnight stay in room 215 you'll use all the DS functions (Touch Screen, microphone, even closing the DS at one point) to interact with other guests, explore the hotel and solve the numerous puzzles you'll come across.
The story centres around Hyde and his obsession with finding his former partner from the police. When he reaches Hotel Dusk, he starts noticing clues that link in with him, maybe something to do with his hotel room apparently having the ability to grant wishes. He meets other guests, each with their own story for Hyde to delve into and eventually many of the guests stories interlink and help Hyde find out more about his missing partner.
The graphics are presented like an partially animated comic book, and the DS it held like a book to play. There is little animation during dialogue apart from some reactions and while walking round the hotel, the backgrounds aren't particularly detailed. However the game does move smoothly and quickly during this section.
Sound wise there's background music (selectable from a juke box in the bar too!) but that's all it is background, easily forgettable. There are occasional effects (a door slamming etc) adequate but not really game enhancing.
The dialogue is well written, if sometimes a little long winded and on times can feel like it is slowing you down. Especially when you've already realised a detail one of the other characters is taking great pains to tell you about.
The story is very well structured and gains depth at each new revelation. You do feel good for discovering clues and delving for some more information.
Game play wise there are a few annoying aspects, I hated the bowling game (sounds weird but when you see it you'll know what I mean) many 'missions' involve burning plenty of Kyles shoe leather back and fore... and it can be very easy to 'die' (you don't die you get kicked out) sometimes. This can make some aspects of the game slightly trial and error. However many of the puzzles are really well constructed and use the DS to the maximum.
There's some replay value in that new things are unlocked the second time, however, once I'd finished I felt doing it all again, would be a chore.
Overall this is a pretty good game, few annoying aspects but these can be easily forgiven to experience some of the sublime aspects of the puzzles. If your a fan of comic books, detective stories or just the genre, go for it!
