Don’t you just hate it when your washing machine gives up the ghost and you know that it’s time to put your hand into your savings to buy another one. I hate it when kitchen appliances break , especially the expensive one’s as you know they are going to set you back a few hundred quid or more. So, as my old tired washing machine has done it’s duty for a family of five for the past eight years is now on it’s way to the scrap yard. I headed out to town to have a look around the electrical stores to see if I could find a bargain washing machine.
After looking around Curry’s Comet and Dixon’s I found a new washing machine that suited my needs at a reasonable price, most of the washing machines are around the same price £ 260 - £300, which is the price range I expected to pay, so when I browsed the shops for a good deal and found the HOTPOINT WML520 White Washing Machine at the cheaper price of £254. 99 at Dixon’s I was happy. In the other shops it was a little dearer so I was happy to pay this for a new space age looking machine to replace my old dinosaur.
So what does it do ? Well, its brilliant ! The machine is the standard size and fits under the work top into the little gap where the other machine lived, it’s a nice white colour and fits in nicely with my other kitchen appliances. It has a large washing capacity of 6kg, which is large enough to stuff a duvet into it to freshen up when you feel like spring cleaning. It is energy efficient and I was surprised to learn that nowadays ( feels ancient ) you only have a cold pipe coming off your washing machine. My old one had the red and blue water pipes to feed the machine the water, but this one only takes in cold water and heats it up. I asked the sales person what happened to the red pipe for the hot water and was told this was an energy efficient machine so will save me money on the electric bills. It says that the machine is a grade A which is the best energy efficient letter you can have as they grade them A to G so it’s good for saving money. I have an electric meter which I buy tokens for each week, living in the middle of no-where means we don’t have modern electric meters or mains gas. So I watched the meter before I put my washing in. The old washing machine used to whiz the meter round and used 50p each wash, my new HOTPOINT WML520 White Washing Machine used 22p ! How brilliant is that ? I was amazed at how much electricity this new machine is going to save me. Not only is it quiet but economical too.
The washing cycles are easy to use with the dials on the front of the machine and an easy to follow numbered guide on the front of the left hand side. These are numbered for the various washes. Wool, quick wash, delicates, pre-wash ect. I usually use the 40 degrees wash and a 900 spin cycle as it only takes around 35 minutes and the washing comes out nearly dry. The drum is huge compared to my old washing machine and it can easily take a full wash with room to spare. I am told that with the smaller load there is more room for the washing to move around and it’s less likely that your washing comes out creased up, which for me is another added extra as I hate ironing.
I was really surprised at how quiet this machine was. My old machine seemed to rattle and hum when on a spin cycle, it was surprising how much I took to this machine immediately for the quietness it has shown. I’m impressed. It has variable spin cycles for you to choose for each different temperature or if your in a hurry as if it’s a nice day you can put it on a low spin cycle and put your washing out on the line to dry in the warm weather and it won’t take long to dry. It also has a spin stability to balance the load and 16 different programmes of washing cycles to choose from, as I said before the guide is on the front of the machine so it’s really each to use. The powder compartments are easy to use two compartments, one for pre-wash and the other for just the quick wash, you can add you fabric conditioner here to if you use it. I don’t as my daughter has sensitive skin so we just use as less chemicals as possible. At the end of the wash programme the drum continues to turn to prevent the washing from settling into creases and folds.
All in all I am really happy with my buy. If your looking for a washing machine then I would recommend this one as it’s quiet, does everything you need it too and has a large drum for the extra washing load. A 40 degrees wash takes about 35 minutes so you don’t have to wait too long for the washing to finish if you need to do a small wash in a hurry, my daughter for example always leaves hers to the last minute and then shoves a quick wash on the morning she is going out so that she can dry it in the tumble dryer and wear it on her night out.
