Unbelievably good novel. This is aimed at the young teen market, and hits the spot 100%. Characters are vividly drawn and believable, the plot is thrillingly simple, and yet horrific. Throughout the book you are constantly surprised by things you haven't thought about. It's a real 'what would I do in this situation' novel. The story starts when Daisy comes to visit England from America and starts to adjust to life in a large archetypal country house. She's just getting to grips with it when England is invaded. The story centres around the way the children cope with this situration. The clincher for the teen market is the fact that the central character suffers from anorexia, and there is also the thorny issue of under-age sex between fifteen-year-olds. These issues are both treated with sensitivity and in a matter-of-fact way. There is no moral preaching, and readers are left to make up their own minds. There is more empahsis on the morality of war and how the country is subsequently managed. I loved this book.
