Advantages Advantages Fabulous food; Really easy to follow; Great Recipes; Interesting information.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Small Print for the actual recipe

The return of winter and the colder months has inspired me to dig out my cooking books and start baking again. One of the books which I have had for years and I dig out regularly when I’m in the mood for baking is Nigella Lawson’s ‘How to be a Domestic Goddess’. As you can probably guess from the name it is a book about how to cook puddings, cakes, biscuits and other sweet things (although the chapter about pastries and tarts is split into sweet and savoury). =ABOUT THE AUTHOR= Nigella Lawson was born in 1960 to Nigel Lawson (Chancellor of the Exchequer in Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet) and ... more

Advantages Advantages lots of yummy cakes

Disadvantages Disadvantages the effect on your waistline, not a beginners guide

I discovered Nigella by way of her Vogue food column, and was impressed that , like me, she considered not only cooking to be a delight and not a chore, but baking to be a cure for stress and not a cause of it. I was brought up cooking but when I came to uni I knew only two recipes, although those I knew off by heart. I had fairy cakes for slightly stressful times and double chocolate fudge cake for serious crises, and I could make a passable victoria cake if the situation was somewhere in between. I like cooking anyway but cooking and baking are very different - cooking is pottering around ... more

Advantages Advantages Loads of recipes, easy to follow, well laid out

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not for the diet conscious, some ingredients are pricey

One of my best friends loves baking, and she is very very good at it. At the time of this book coming out one of her flatmates bought a copy, and on cold winter nights we would often crowd round her flat making cakes! Mmmmm. When she left the flat to move elsewhere we decided that we each needed a copy of our own, and it had now steadily turned into a favourite pasttime. However busy our year my friends and I always arrange to have a Christmas dinner together, and since we al moved out of home this has rotated between our various houses, with this book usually providing dessert! So what makes ... more

Advantages Advantages Reliable recipes, put in context

Disadvantages Disadvantages You may just put on a bt of weight as once you've started you can't stop!

I'm a great believer that there's a cookery book out there for everyone. Whether you are an expert baker or a novice egg-boiler there'll be something to suit. My own cookery book collection is quite extensive and eclectic borne out of the fact that I like many different styles of food and, depending on my mood, will seek to cook or bake in many different ways. There are, however, a number of books that regularly make it off the shelf and onto the worktop. Nigella's Domestic Goddess book makes a fairly regular appearance on the work surface. Baking, over and above the relative staples of a ... more

Advantages Advantages so real you can taste every image

Disadvantages Disadvantages expensive. genuine risks to arteries and waistline

One of my most evocative childhood recollections is the smell of cakes baking, after a long session of mixing, tasting and bowl-licking in the kitchen with a wonderfully indulgent Nana, who created delicious home-baked treats on a regular basis – quite without recourse to recipe books, as that was a generation that simply knew how to bake and cook. My Mum seemed to know as well, whilst not having the endless afternoons of a grandparent to let me play with pastry offcuts, she always turned out fantastic-looking birthday cakes and biscuits alongside daily wholesome, home-cooked meals. I ... more
