My Mam loves Gok Wan. She'll happily let the kids have their cartoons on all day, and when her husband comes home in the evening he can watch as much Star Trek as he wants. But when it's time for any of Gok's shows, my Mam takes charge of the remote. It is the one programme she has to watch each week, so naturally I had to watch it too whilst staying there. At first he kind of annoyed me, it didn't seem like my kind of thing at all. Though before long I was loving How To Look Good Naked, surprisingly as much as my Mam. Having then confessed this to her, I found she was throwing a book in my direction - Gok Wan's How to Dress. I'd read Trinny and Susannah's What Not To Wear a few years back, though found it rather dull. However I had a feeling that this one was going to be a bit more exciting. For one thing the cover was incredibly stunning. There is an image of a grinning Gok on the front, mounted on a lovely pink swirly background. It looks very simple but incredibly eye catching.
On the inside there is a little contents page that splits the book up into sections. Each one tells you what clothes are fashionable, and what shapes they suit. They also help you to accessories with full length images of 'normal' models dressed in the garments. The sections are broken into: Basics, Underwear, Workwear, Going Out, Holidays, Weddings, Mums, Beauty and Shopping.
Each section has pages upon pages of fashion tips and combination of clothes. It talks about layering and how to get that perfect look with the help of flawless make up. Each section is fantastic, and provides you will tips for any occasion. The one thing I like best about it is the fact that it doesn't seem to date. The book was released in March 2009, and now at the end of the year you would think the fashion styles would differ yet I find that the tips Gok is offering still apply months later, and will do for years. It is definitely a helpfu book!
Throughout the book I kept spotting garmets that I liked - the odd skirt here, a jumper there. I longed to know where to buy them from, but there was no information on the pages. However I came to 'Dictionary' at the back, and was suddenly overjoyed. There I found a little description of each and every item in the book, as well as the store/designer that stocked it. The only problem was that a price was not given, though that was easily solved. There's a gorgeous skirt from H&M I have my eye on now...! I actually think I might buy this book instead of stealing my Mam's copy, and I can do so from Amazon.co.uk for as little as £6. Now I feel that is a fantastic price to pay for the perfect style guide. The tips and fashion ideas are endless, and all in an enjoyable read too. Whether you are a fan of Gok Wan or just looking for something to help you sort out your wardrobe, then this is the perfect book for you!
