Introduction
Ultra violet filters are probably one of the least glamorous and most mundane photographic accessories around, yet they are an essential part of of your system, and practically all photographers fit them to the front of their lenses and leave them there.
So who makes them?, what are they?, what do they do? and why would you want one? I will try and answer these questions below.
Firstly who makes them?
There are several companies that make filters for camera lenses, but Hoya, "the subject of this review", are one of the biggest and well known brands of filter around.
Hoya was founded in Japan in 1941 and have their headquarters in Shinjuku, Tokyo, they manufacture optical products ranging from laser equipment and photographic equipment to contact lenses, and they are one of the world's leading ...

The Lens
The Pro1's lens is a 7.2 - 50.8mm f/2.2 - 3.5L optic. This is equivalent to 28-200mm in familiar 35mm terms. The big news here is that this is an "L" Series lens, the first time that Canon has applied this designation to any lens other than pro-level lenses for its SLR cameras
The lens is provided with the usual petal-shaped lens shade. I'm not crazy about its design though. It doesn't fit firmly. When twisted into place it locks, but then a bit more firm pressure and it continues to rotate. Also, the front of the lens is not threaded for filters. Instead Canon provides a filter adaptor which bayonettes on and which then can take 58mm filters. But, the provided lens shade does not then fit. This is simply not ...
Advantages: Quality 'feel', does the job superbly and lets you screw other filters on to it. Disadvantages: Doesnt turn you into David Bailey ;)
Well what can I say really? Ive used this filter for about a year now and its standing its test to time. The filter threads nicely and securely to the end of your lens. I also like the fact that I can screw another filter on top of it. My cheaper 'non-branded' polarising filter doesnt let me do that and it annoys the hells out of me.
Optics wise its a quality piece of glass and you certainly wont notice any degradation in the quality of your photos. Also the little plastic case you buy it in is good, it feels strong and slips into your camera bag nicely.
Other than that peeps I dont know what else to say, so here's the conclusion: A nice quality piece of kit, that does the job well and wont leave you disapointed! ...
