Port Ahoy! Cracking Belkin USB Hub
Advantages: great design, vertical ports for regular items such as memory sticks, led display Disadvantages: maybe a bit expensive but comparrison but it is quality
...have enough usb ports
(b) belkin are a respected manufacturer
(c) I liked the design
It cost me £12 when I bought it but I think that was the stores mistake as I have seen it advertised at between £19 and £24. Even at that price though this is a good piece of kit.
Bearing in mind you can get USB 2 hubs for about half the piece of this one made by companies you may have never heard of, the design and features on this device make it a very attractive ... ...a horizontal device.
The Belkin hub has indicator lights on the front showing the status of each of the devices attached in green and a red one showing the power. The hub itself is externally powered and both this and the PC connection are positioned at either end of the rear of the device. Between these two inputs are the five USB outputs.
The device sits nicely on the desk and having a black and silver finish, fits in nicely with most computer ...

USB is for me
Advantages: Have plenty of USB ports at any time Disadvantages: Can be a bit of a pain when it comes to the power supply.
...choose?
I chose the Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 4-Port Hub; this was based on the price, availability and looks. The price and availability of the USB hub were my main purchasing considerations. What did I get?
I got the main USB hub, a connection cable (one end plugs into the hub and the other plugs into a USB port on the computer), a transformer (this supplies power to the hub via a cable that plugs into the hub, more about this later in the review) ... ...£25.
What does it look like?
The hub itself is squircle shaped (a cross between a square and a circle) on one end are four USB ports, at one side is a socket for connecting the USB lead that connects the hub to the computer and another socket for the power supply that comes from the transformer. On the top and directly over the USB sockets are LED's that tell me when any of the USB sockets are in use and another LED that tells me if it is connected ...

a new version available, avoid this one
Advantages: small, no power supply needed Disadvantages: very old hat, will not work with all printers, bad instructions
...is as good as obsolete. Belkin should ,in my view, withdraw this product from there line as they do make a modern version at much the same price. As is often the case with Belkin it will do the job but not fully and after a lot of fiddleing about. Firstly it comes in the usual clear heat sealed package which must be attacked with a knife to gain entry, once your in and open the 'installation booklet' it says in large bold letters 'this item will not ... ...had to go to the Belkin web site and download the manual, THEN I could work out how to actually use the switch. It would work, but not switch between printers using the hot key, I guess this is due to the incompatability with multi-funtion printers so I gave up at that stage. So bottom line is, I think this will work OK with a basic printer but play safe and buy the later model, which I believe will work with all. If you do buy then expect the usual ...

Too many PC's and Too little Space: A Solution?
Advantages: Allows 4 PCs to share one Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor Disadvantages: Switching regularly can be a pain. PS2 Only
...invest in something like this Belkin Omniview E-Series 4-port KVM Switch, which provides the ability to use a single monitor, keyboard and mouse on up to 4 PCs. The Belkin OmniView I have been provided with did not come with connection cables, so make sure that if you are getting one of these, you cost in the price of cables to each of the PCs on your desk. Once I had got the necessary cables, I plugged them into the 3 PCs I used for the test, and ... ...button on top of the Belkin once again, I flick from port 1, past port 2, to Port 3, where the IBM is connect. The Screen re-trains and a DOS-style screen comes into focus... It's the POST screen! The IBM's BIOS is telling me that there is a keyboard error, and to press F1 to proceed with the boot (No, I am not joking!). I hit F1 and everything proceeds normally, booting properly. Further tests indicate that if I flick from one port to another at ...
