Overall this is an excellent product, 8-ports are more than enough for most houses and have room for expansion and with the reliability it offers you can hide it away and forget about it.
Well Done Netgear on and truly wonderful piece of equipment. ...

Ideal switch for the small business or developers
Advantages: Easy to set up, configure and use Disadvantages: None
...The Product?
Well we use Netgear equipment in our office because you know with Netgear, you are buying quality at an affordable price.
So we opted for the FS116 Desktop Switch.
The size of it?
Well its about an inch high and about a foot long. It is about 6 inches from fron to back.
This means it is small enough to be hidden away.
The Capacity of it?
Well it takes up to 15 computers connected to it plus the link to the network. This means ... ...computers. Connections are via RJ45 type standard network connections (the ones that look like big modem sockets!!!)
Performance?
Fantastic. We have not had any problem with slow data transfer, packet collisions or overload. It just gets on with its job.
Installation?
Could not be simpler. There is no software to install. No configuring to do via interfaces or windows. Simply plug it into the mains, plug in your network connections and off you ...

Great little switch for home, or small office
Advantages: small, plug and play, cheap Disadvantages: not manageable but at this price, can't complain
I've known Netgear's stuff through work, and needed a little switch for home as I have currently have three PCs connected and sharing an internet connection.
For those who are unaware of what a network switch does, it allows multiple computers to talk to one-another via their network cards. As most PCs now come with at least one network port as standard, then having more than PC in a household becomes an interesting prospect.
This is the smallest ... ...than the 5 network ports at it's rear. The unit comes with a power supply, but no network cables, these will need to be purchased seperately.
Each port has a single status indicator on the front of the switch, flashing when transfer is taking place.
This is a 10/100 network switch, gigabit switches are available elsewhere. This switch is non-manageable, that is to say, you can't connect to it remotely to determine what ports are active. At this ...

Neat Netgear 5 port gigabit switch
Advantages: Cheap, reliable, simple to use Disadvantages: None.
...bought two of them.
Netgear have a reputation for cheap and reliable networking equipment, and this 5 port unmanaged switch is no exception.
When I bought my two, they were retailing online for approx £35 each - but these days you should be able to get one for approx £25 (inc VAT.)
The switch is more or less the size of my hand (yes, I have big hands). With 5 ports on the back - all are auto-sensing, as is the gigabit standard, so you don't have ... ...only other port on the back is for power, which is the usual "wall-wart" plug in transformer you get with most home networking equipment.
Given the switch is unmanaged, you can just plug desktop computers, laptops, XBOXes, network printers straight into the switch, and not worry about anything other than configuring the devices themselves.
I would recommend this switch to anyone who has a few machines on their home or small office network, that ...

Netgear GS105 5 Port Gigabit Switch
Advantages: Easy installation, small, sturdy, quiet, auto uplink Disadvantages: Runs quite hot
...however, as with all other Netgear switches, this unit gets quite hot. For peace of mind it would be best to keep it away from sources of heat (I tend to lay an old PII heatsink on the unit just to help with the cooling!)
Troubleshooting
The LED indicators provide you with all the information you could possibly need to help diagnose any connectivity problems - not that you should have any
Conclusion
Very fast, reliable equipment. With prices ...
