I was bought this by a guy I work with for Christmas in 2003 and as soon as I smelt it I knew I loved it. I’m still rather flattered that he would associate such a seductive fragrance with myself – the guy obviously has good taste!
The box is pretty simple – black in colour and not a lot on it but with a bright red interior. The bottle is also simple - except that the bottle is a gorgeous deep red colour, although you can still see how much you have left through the glass with silver writing to tell you the make and type of perfume.
The bottle (mine was 50ml) has a sleek sort of concave shape to it – only 2 ½ cm diameter at the top and slinking out to 5 ½ cm at the bottom (you can see what I mean by the picture). It has a silver lids which clicks on and pulls off and a fine mist spray squirter is concealed underneath.
I thought that seeing as this perfume was gorgeous but a little shrouded in mystery – it’s quite difficult to find info on and I got it as a present – that I would do some digging to see what came up with.
The website –
www.hugo.com describes it as being - For the woman who revels in the night, Hugo creates Deep Red. She doesn’t care what the crowd does or thinks, She’s witty, outspoken, and feels free to express her passion and sensuality. And she’s up for everything, Just like Deep Red.
So, it was becoming more and more interesting. I found the fragrance to be quite deep and musky but with both a slightly fruity and floral fragrance – it’s certainly very provocative.
Everywhere I tried to get more information on this product I found it being described as sensual, provocative and passionate, (one to bring out the femme fatale then!) and is categorised as a fruity-floral fragrance.
Hugo Boss uses the slogan - Your Fragrance. Your Rules. – well, I could definitely make up some of my own with this product!
I’m informed that it was introduced in 2001 and that Hugo Deep Red by Hugo Boss is a sophisticated fruity-floral fragrance based on two facets: a fusion of energy and sensuality. It’s said to have been created for Hugo Boss by IFF perfumers Alan Astori and Beatrice Piquet. Deep Red opens on a lively, sparkling accord with fruity notes blended to an elegant floral heart touched with discreet spicy touches, then descends into a bewitchingly sensuous base of woods and musks. Intensely feminine in character, Deep Red is a wilful and provocative fragrance for women who know exactly what they want, and go out to get it.
Hmm, so what’s in it then? Well… there are three notes and just in case you haven’t read my last perfume op – here’s the low-down on how they work: -
The top notes are the most volatile ones in the blend - the ones you'll smell first, and also the ones that will evaporate first as you wear your blend, usually within 1-2 hours. They form the first impression your perfume makes, and should "lead" your nose into the heart of the perfume by harmonizing well with the other notes.
The middle notes (also called heart notes) are the heart of a perfume. Oils that evaporate with 2-4 hours are considered “middle notes.” They should give your perfume roundness and fullness and complexity.
The base notes take the longest time to evaporate, some base notes can take several days to evaporate (although not in many cases – and certainly not in this one) and they have two functions in a perfume. First, they're the least volatile elements, so they emerge more slowly, and their aroma will remain the longest. So it's very important to make sure you like your base note. Second, they can have a "fixative" effect on the entire blend, keeping the top and middle notes from evaporating as quickly.
Right, now that done with - what are Deep Red’s notes? Well, I was quite surprised at the some of the things in here, but it makes for a truly brilliant combination.
Top Notes: Blackcurrant, Cassis, Pear, Tangerine, Clementine, Blood Orange
Base Notes: Mysore Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Cashmeran, Vanilla, Musks
It’s all in there, everything you need to create a well balanced heady mix of seduction.
I’ve also been informed that it was made for day-wear. Although I agree with this in principle even if it is slightly dramatic, I think it also makes an excellent evening wear perfume. It’s the sort of perfume that makes you feel like a real woman when you wear it, you ooze sensuality – so it’s definitely one for the women and not for the girls (in my opinion anyway). It has the characteristic of knowing – and if you’re not old enough to ‘know’ then I don’t think you can carry this one off to its full potential.
Right, so having decided that I love this and being close to the end of the bottle now (I haven’t worn it everyday) I wanted to know where I could get more from and how much it would cost me. I found the answer at Boots, which is where I normally obtain my perfumes from, although I’m sure you can probably find better deals online somewhere.
There is also a Shower Gel (150ml - £15.00), Body Lotion (150ml - £17.00) in the range. I am also informed that you can buy a roll-onDeodorant which comes in 50ml but I haven’t been able to track this one down so can’t give a price for it.
It's not the cheapest you can buy but is about average and i still think you're getting a good deal because it truly is divine (dah-ling!)
I find the perfume lasts well throughout the day or evening. For example, if I use it in the morning before going to work, I can still catch a glimpse of the fragrance by the time I finish. It’s not overpowering and is definitely captivating enough to make the men in the office linger at your desk a little longer!
As with all perfume, this product is of course flammable and should be kept away from heat and flame.

Happy seducing!
