Hugo Boss ~ Energize ~ Eau De Toilette ~ For Him

I bought Hugo Boss Energize Eau de Toilette spray for my husband for his Christmas. He has quite a few Hugo Boss fragrances and he likes the smell of them as do I. So when I saw Energize in Boots I decided to buy it for him as a little extra present. Like me my husband loves his fragrances and has a collection almost as big as mines, he has approximately 50-60 bottles of different fragrances. If it were up to him he would only have four or five, but I keep buying him different ones as gifts and he never seems to complain.

I paid £30 for the Hugo Boss Energize gift set for him which comprised of a 75ml bottle of Eau De Toilette perfume, a tube of shaving balm and a tube of shower gel. Now some of you are going to be confused now because I have referred to Energize as a perfume, you are probably thinking "its an aftershave not a perfume". The truth be it that it isn't technically an aftershave because the fragrance is an Eau De Toilette, if it were an aftershave then it would be Hugo Boss Energize Aftershave. An aftershave is totally different from an Eau de Toilette/Parfum for him because Aftershaves contain a lot less alcohol in them than Eau De Parfum/Toilettes because they are designed to be applied directly onto the face. The lack of alcohol in aftershaves means that they don't have particularly good staying power.

As you can see from the picture at the top of this review the bottle of Energize has a really nice modern design and shape. I like the chunky design and chunky silver lid on the bottle because it looks really modern, decorative and masculine. The bottle of perfume is see through so you can see how much you are using and how much is remaining inside the bottle. The perfume inside the bottle is a lovely pink colour which isn't masculine; I think that the pink colour of the aftershave is similar to that of Joop Homme.

Fragrance Notes

Hugo Boss Energize Eau De Toilette is described as having ~

Top Notes of Pink Pepper, Mandarin, Kumquat and Melon
The top notes are the first phase of the perfume; they are usually the most volatile and evaporate from the skin very quickly. The top notes are usually very light and refreshing and their scent usually lasts for anything between five and ninety minutes.

Middle Notes of ambrette, juniper, white freesia, cardamom and coriander
The middle notes of a scent are therapeutic and balancing oils, sometimes the middle notes are often referred to as the heart notes of a scent. The middle notes are not always evident and can take between thirty and sixty minutes to develop on your skin, and they last for anything between two to four hours

Base Notes of jacaranda wood, nubuck leather, suede note, black cocoa, and amyris woods
The base notes are the longest lasting notes in a fragrance, most perfumes use the same base notes. This is because they give the perfume more staying power and stop the top and middle notes from evaporating from your skin as quickly.

The Scent

As soon as Hugo Boss Energize is sprayed onto your skin you can immediately detect a gorgeous, light, spicy fruity aroma. The aroma from Energize isn't strong or overpowering, it is a really light, airy refreshing scent which is really masculine. Most of the time Men's fragrances are really strong and overpowering when they are first sprayed because they have a really strong alcoholic aroma at first. But I was pleasantly surprised with the light and airy aroma from this one. I think that Energize is a brilliant perfume to use as a casual day time perfume because of its light airy fragrance.

The light airy fruity aroma which you can smell as soon as Energize is applied to your skin is that of sweet juicy melon and mandarin which is accompanied with a slight spicy kick. I think that the spiciness of the pink pepper compliments the citrus fruit top notes perfectly and gives the scent its masculine edge. If the fruity top notes didn't have the pink pepper kick then this would have made the scent smell too feminine. The pink pepper isn't at all overpowering or too spicy it is more of a background top note which isn't too obtrusive or cloying.

The top notes of energize seem to last for approximately an hour or so before they gradually start to fade and blend in with the middle notes of the perfume. I think that the mandarin and melon seem to linger for a longer amount of time than the pink pepper fragrance note does. The melon and mandarin compliment each other nicely because the melon is really fresh and light where as the mandarin is a little more obvious and stronger.

The middle notes of Energize are a lot different to the fruity citrus top notes because they are more earthy and floral, even although there are a few floral notes in this phase of the fragrance the scent is not at all feminine, it is still really masculine and fresh. The earthy fragrance you can immediately detect in the middle notes is that of Juniper because it has a nice crisp, slightly fruity aroma. The crisp earthy aroma from the Juniper is complimented with the herbal earthy tone of coriander and cardamom which again adds a little subtle spicy aroma to the fragrance. The earthy middle notes of the fragrance seem to have great staying power considering they are very light and airy, I would say that the middle notes last for approximately four or five hours before they gradually blend in with the base notes .

After the top and middle notes of the fragrance have worn off you will notice that the fragrance has a completely different aroma, the scent changes from being fruity, slightly floral to more earthy and woody. This is because the base notes of the fragrance are really earthy ones like jacaranda wood and amyris woods. The woody aroma from the jacaranda and amyris seems to compliment the earthy aroma from the cardamom and coriander perfectly. The woody aroma in the last stages of the perfume is lovely and not at all overpowering or cloying, the fresh light theme which has continued throughout the fragrance is still evident even although the woody notes are more apparent and visible. I think that the jacaranda is more woody and earthy than the amyris; and the amyris has more of a fresher sweeter woody aroma. The base notes again have excellent staying power and last for about five hours before the fragrance had finally faded away and needs reapplied again.

Perfume Information

All perfumes smell slightly different on different people, and this is due to us having different oils in our skin. The staying power of a scent also differs from person to person because we have different types of skin oils too. I said in the review that this perfume lasts for about three or four hours on me, but it could last a longer or shorter amount of time on you.

People who have dry skin types will notice that perfumes don't last long on their skin. If you have dry skin and have this problem you should try layering the scent of a perfume by using the matching body lotion or shower gel before applying the perfume. By doing this you are layering the scent and applying a base for the perfume to layer itself upon, so you should notice that the fragrance will last a lot longer on your skin.

If you like the sound of this perfume then I advise that you go into your local perfume store and test it before you buy it. When testing the scent spray it onto your wrist and wear it for a few hours before you decide whether you like it or not, because the scent changes the longer you wear it due to the different notes which make up the fragrance.

When testing a perfume don't smell the scent on a perfume card because it might smell lovely on the card and when you buy it and wear it at home it might smell totally different and you might not like the scent you are wearing. I made this mistake a few times in the past and wasted £30 on a fragrance which I didn't wear again and put in the bin.

Staying Power

Hugo Boss Energize has excellent staying power considering it is an Eau De Toilette fragrance. If Energize is applied first thing in the morning you can still smell it last thing at night. On average I would say that the fragrance stays on your skin for well over twelve hours. So it is the perfect scent to wear during the day or for going to work because you can be sure that it will last you throughout the day.

Remember that this isn't an aftershave it is an Eau De Toilette fragrance. Although you can also purchase Energize in the Aftershave format too, but be ware that it doesn't have near as good staying power as the Eau De Toilette. If you are just looking for a fresh light fragrance which only lasts for an hour or two then the after shave option may suit you better. If you want the fragrance to last you throughout the whole day then opt for the Eau De Toilette format.

Price And Availability

Hugo Boss Energize is available from most large department stores such as Boots, Debenhams, Superdrug and Body Care. You can also purchase it from some online retailers too although priced may differ from place to place; so it is a good idea to have a look around and get the cheapest offer to you.

A 75ml bottle of Energize costs between £24-30 depending on where you purchase it from.
A 125ml bottle costs between £28-32

The aftershave is also available and it costs between £20-24 for a 75ml bottle.

I think that the Eau De Toilette is the better option to purchase because it has a longer lasting fragrance.

My Opinion

I think that Hugo Boss Energize is a really light airy fragrance which is perfect for casual use. It isn't overpowering or too strong and you only have to use a small amount of it at anyone given time. It is a fragrance where as a little goes a long way and too much is too much lol.

If you like fresh airy fragrances then this might be the perfect fragrance for you . It would also make a perfect gift for either a birthday, Christmas or anniversary. The fragrance is really flexible and will suit either the younger or older gentleman because of its light airy composition.
