I stumbled across this article quite by accident while searching for milk thistle on ciao, and felt compelled to write an opinion on the subject.
When my daughter, now four, was born, I was intent on breastfeeding. It seemed to my mind the most logical option for me, after all, its natural, free, and midwives and health professionals insist that breast is best for baby - boosting the immune system by providing the right balance of vitamins, minerals, and antibodies a growing infant needs.
However, things didn't go according to plan- my daughter, upon her first breastfeeding attempt , developed what I thought was an adorable little snuffle snort .However, doctors disagreed, whisked her away for tests, and discovered pneumonia, so took the decision to keep her in the neonatal unit.
As I was still weak from an operation caused by complications during labour, the decision was taken between the midwives and myself, that rather than me being dragged from one end of the hospital to the other to breastfeed my daughter, it made more sense for me to express the milk and for my daughter to be tube fed nasally - simply because it seemed swallowing increased her breathing problems. I was a natural at expressing - discarding the pump and preferring to do it manually with cold hands cooled on an ice pack, as it soothed me at the same time.
All went well, and a few days later it was time to put my daughter to the breast again - and she refused to latch on for more than a few seconds, or to suck. A lovely midwife name Belinda, whose kindness I'll never forget, sat with me for four hours while I tried unsuccessfully to feed my daughter - the milk was plainly there.
Other midwives and health professionals were not so helpful, insisting that every mother could breastfeed, and they made me keep trying for two months, both at hospital and at home, with no success and my daughter still losing, rather than gaining weight. Each time, I reported the same problem - my daughter would take a few strong gulps after latching on, pull away screaming, and refuse to go back for more.
At this point, I decided to try bottle feeding - again with the same result - a few sucks, then tears and tantrums (from both my daughter and myself as I was by this point very worried).
Eventually, a doctor friend of my mothers that I spoke to about it arranged for my daughter to visit the paediatric unit at a local hospital for my daughter to be assessed - and within half an hour, a junior doctor observing me feeding spotted the problem - Gastroesophageal Reflux
Basically, after taking a few sucks, my daughter's milk was coming back up into her throat, along with stomach acid, which was burning her throat and making it sore (much like the feeling vomiting can leave in your throat.) A dose of infant Gaviscon later, and my daughter successfully completed her first full feed, sadly via bottle as my breast milk had by now dried up. She was 5 months old at this point.
Given the choice, I would love to have breast fed my child, rather than have to spend months inserting a tube down her nasal passage to ensure she got some nutrients. However, I feel health professionals, when there is a problem, should focus less on the 'Breast is Best, Everyone can do it' line of thought, and more on discovering the reasons why a particular person is having trouble.
Because of the delay in discovering the problem, largely caused by midwives, health visitors and doctors INSISTING that I could do it, and just wasn't trying hard enough, refusing to send us to paediatric for analysis, my daughter lost a lot of weight, was considerably distressed, as was I, and we lost out on what could have been a valuable bonding experience. And because of the delay, I eventually lost the option of breastfeeding altogether.
Pros of Breastfeeding: ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Free
Hygienic
No bottles or expensive sterilizing equipment required.
Natural source of antibodies, vitamins and minerals
Cons of Breastfeeding: ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Health professionals are pushy about this option, and like to insist everyone can do it without assessing individual circumstances.
Having to be careful about what you eat and drink as it can be passed on in your milk.
Can be time consuming and inconvenient, although expressing milk takes some of the demand off you and allows your partner to help.
When I have another child, I certainly intend to breastfeed -or at least to try. While it doesn't suit everyone, for me, it seems the most natural option. But I will never again allow a health professional to make me feel guilty or deficient as a mother because I can't do it successfully. At the end of the day, I have one infant, and I know better what she needs than someone who deals with many infants each day and doesn't treat them as individuals.
At the end of the day - it's a personal choice, don't let anyone take that choice away from you. The star rating is for the attitude of the majority of health proffesionals I met during my ordeal.
Thanks for reading- and enjoy your kids, however you choose to feed them.
Advantages: Seek advice when needed. Disadvantages: Conflicting advice from professionals
Who knows best ? Breast feeding, these word sends shivers down my spine. Even now after all these years. Those words terrify me. From the moment my pregnancy was confirmed. I was asked , if I was going to breastfeed. OH MY GOD. I AM PREGNANT, is still going through my mind. What do you mean, am I going to breastfeed or bottle feed. ERRR, I don't know. Let me get my head around the fact that I am pregnant first and what that means to my way of life, ... ...the rest of my life.
Everyone seemed to have an opinion on my pregnancy, and what I should be doing at every stage of my pregnancy. Doctors, Midwifes, Gynecologists, family, friends, everyone. They all seemed to have an opinion on what would be best for me and my soon to be born baby. I sought advice, and bought all the baby books for each step of the pregnancy. I thought this was a good place to start.
Until you actually go through the experience ...

Advantages: Most natural way of feeding your baby. Disadvantages: Not for everyone
From my own personal experience especially when i had my first child. I felt under alot of pressure from my midwife and my partner to breast feed my baby.
It was something that i was never really comfortable with doing even though i was torn between how i felt and what others thought was best for my baby.
We all know that breast milk is physically better for babies because it is the milk nature intended for them. Breast milk gives your baby the ... ...from you that help to protect his health whilst he builds up his owm immune system.
However formula milk can be just as good. Modern baby milks are more or less extensively adapted to be as close as possible to breast milk. It also contains added vitamins and irons.
Whey based Formula is the most like breast milk with simular levels of protein and minerals.
I think no body has the right to put pressure on you or criticize you for what ever you ...

Advantages: free, enables you to bond well with baby, best nutrients etc Disadvantages: not always suitable to feed in public, noone else can feed unless expressed.
Even before we had concieved I knew that I wanted to breastfeed my son. I was breastfed as a child and so was my younger sister, we are both healthy adults and I feel we have benefitted from it in the long run. I was asked by many people when I was pregnant if I was going to breastfeed and each time I would say that I wanted to very much so I will start with that and see how me and my baby get on with it and take it from there. I got many comments ... ...ignored, but everyone is entitled to their opinion and I do try and keep that into consideration when feeding my son. I fortunatley had a straightforward birth and was able to get my son latched to breast within 20 minutes of delivery and he fed again and again in hospital. I was in a ward after giving birth with many women who had caeserians and were not able to easily or comfortably breast feed so I feel incredibly lucky to have had such an easy ...

Advantages: Good nutrition, bonding, natural Disadvantages: Can be extremely painful!
I've always believed that breast is best, so when I discovered that I was pregnant, there was no question in my mind as how I would feed my baby. It's the most natural thing in the world. I was of the belief that breast feeding should be allowed anywhere and that if anyone objects, then they have a problem - afterall that is why women have breasts - it's just our culture that views them in a different way.
When my baby was born, she latched on during ... ...I felt that it was a bit uncomfortable, but had been told to expect this to an extent.
I had been encouraged by health professionals whilst I was pregnant to breastfeed (as I said this was always my intention). However, I didn't find that the support I received was very good in hospital. Some of the staff took time out to help me with positioning and attachment, whereas others seemed more to tell me to get on with it. I really struggled with it ...

Advantages: Free!! Bonding time, easy. Disadvantages: occasional soreness
Myself and my husband decided that we would like to try breastfeeding with our first child... and we are both glad that we did.
Not only is breastfeeding inexpensive it is also a great way to bond with your child, there was nothing nicer than when I had to get up in the night to feed my daughter than having a cosy warm cuddle whilst feeding her rather than trudging to the kitchen to heat up a bottle and letting her wake up fully and scream the house ... ...your child everything that they need and you know that there are no additives! The only thing perhaps to remember is to avoid spicy foods (I had a particularly strong curry when my baby was quite small and she ended up with tummy ache and a smelly nappy for a few days!) I am sure that feeding my daughter has given her the best start in life, she is healthy and whenever she was unwell she was comforted by her feeds. The only disadvantage that can ...

Advantages: Gets really good results Disadvantages: Can squeak and creak a bit!
the massage cushion. Use a couple of quick short pumps to get let-down to occur, then pump away! You can feel a bit like a cow doing this(!), but it's nice to see the end product (if a bit bizarre that you're actually producing milk!). Change the position of the pump occasionally to make sure you completely drain your breast.
To store expressed milk, make sure you do it either in the main body of the fridge or a freezer. Opinions vary as to how long you can keep humanmilk - from as little as 24 hours to 8 days. You can freeze it for up to three months, but some women's milk contains an enzyme that makes it go sour before then.
There are good instructions for assembling and using this breast pump on the Avent website - www.aventbaby.com as well as more information on storing breastmilk.
I would heartily recommend this pump as I ...
I would recomend buying a packet of these to every expectant mother weather you intend to breast feed or not.
Firstly for any one who doesnt know a breast pad is a absorbant pad used inside your bra to absorb any leakage of breast milk, you can buy disposable or washable breast pads. I have tryed both, the washable breast pads cost me around £5 for a pack of 4 pads and the disposable ones cost me £2 for a pack of 20.
You will need these weather you decide to breast feed or not as you choosing not to breast feed doesnt mean that your breasts wont produce milk in the first few days so there will still be leaks untill your milk has dryed up.
After the birth of both of my children i turned into the human cow, my breasts would leak every time my baby cryed, not so bad with my second child as she only cryed when hungry but with my ...
Advantages: Very thin, very absorbent and very comfortable! Disadvantages: Slightly pricey but seriously worth it!
These disposable breast pads are invaluable (I was going to say indispensable but it didn't sound quite right and probably doesn't make much sense!)! Anyway, what I am trying to say is that they saved me from smelling like a cheese factory and looking like some kind of human water (well, milk) feature! And for that I will be eternally grateful!
In the early days of breastfeeding the delectable Daisy (note, I hope to write a review on my breastfeeding experience soon), I tried everything and anything I could lay my hands on, in both disposable and washable varieties. Given the amount of milk flowing from my enormous bosoms (they were quite a good size to start off with but they just got carried away!), the washable variety soon went out the window (well, onto ebay) as I would have needed at least 2000 of them to keep up with all ...
