History? yes please!

Advantages: Fantastic lecturers, module selection, renouned, interesting courses
Disadvantages: One or two poor modules, sometimes admin a bit poor

...issue; the history. The history course seems to be in three stages. Year one mainly being introductions (most modules aptly titled "an introduction to...". Year two being more in depth, with a wide range of more niche modules being offered. Year three is the dissertation year when you select one module as your specialist subject and have a wide range of assesment within that module. As expected most assesment is via essays, exams, portfolios, seminar ...
...of Keele History, I must say it is a fantastic one. I have been tutored by some amazing, funny, approachable and lively members of staff (watch out for the medieval historians, they're the best and most enthusiastic!). I do rate MOST modules, besides I would called the "historical research and writing" module of 1st year poor, dull and badly structured. Module structure for seminar/lecture times throughout the course is slightly haphazard too, but ...

American Studies at Keele

Advantages: Great tutors, department is in the top 5 of the UK
Disadvantages: They assume you know lots about the subject

...university in the Midlands studying American Studies and History, and seeing as I've just done a review on the History side of things I thought I would do the same for American Studies. Opting to take history as a degree subject was fairly easy for me because I've always had a love for it, but my choice of American Studies was a little random, and even now I try to work out just why I did pick it... I guess I enjoy learning about American history ...
...course is they think that American Studies is a bit like media studies - a bit of a cop out subject, and I suppose in some ways it is. But we don't learn about modern America, we don't learn about "popular culture" or anything like that, we learn various bits about the geography of the place, (one very memorable quote from one of our first lectures was "America is a huge place, bigger than you will ever imagine, let's leave it at that"), about the ...

The department which hates students

Advantages: None, unless you like being a non-person
Disadvantages: Poor department, bad attitude

...the wrong category. At Keele, Psychology is a natural science, not a socisl science, and they never let you forget it. In fact, if you want to take a social science approach to the subject, you're simply persona non grata in the department. Rumour has it that staff who were more interested in 'fluffy' social science research were marginalised or pushed out. This department doesn't like students. If you're a student in the Psychology department, ...
...you like that sort of psychology - neural stuff, rats and so on, and lab work. They're mean when it comes to marking. This department doesn't like giving high grades, and they even mark students down when someone's close to the borderline between two grades. Other departments at Keele - I know this from my own experience of another department and from friends in different departments - are more reasonable and will give a borderline student an extra ...

History at Keele

Advantages: Great scenery, fun lecturers, wide range of topics
Disadvantages: Disorganistion of admin

...suits me to a t. History has always been a passion of mine and I love spending my spare time visiting museums and reading books, so a degree studying the subject seemed a good idea to me! The history department at Keele is pretty much like any other department in Keele - pretty disorganised but run by a fantastic bunch of people! The secretaries in the office are great and answer any queries quickly and the lecturers range from grumpy old sods to ...
...One* All first year history students study a set outline. In the first semester this involves 'Modern History', which is mostly taught through 10 lectures looking at the wider scope (the whole year group listening to a lecturer) and there are 5 seminars focusing on smaller topics (groups of around 14 students working with a tutor). 'Modern' history runs from 1789 (The French Revolution) through to the modern day so there's a good range. It's based ...
