I purchased this box initially for the Euro 2008 Matches which were shown on ITV HD as well as BBC HD. Upon opening the box, the first thing I noticed was how small the foxsat is. To give an idea I'd say it's 3/4 the size of a standard Sky digibox.
The unit itself is supplied with the remote control, batteries, scart cable, component cable, and a reasonable quality HDMI cable. Connection of the box is very simple with just one connection to the satellite dish, mains plug and HDMI cable to your TV (assuming you are using a HD ready TV, which you should be if purchasing a HD receiver).
After a small delay waiting for the box to boot up, the unit automatically searches for firmware updates and scans for all available channels. You have to enter your postcode during the setup process in order for the box to determine your regional channels (such as ITV and BBC).
After storing the channels you can view the full epg listings or show a quick list of all available channels by pressing the ok button. This shortcut button also shows which channels are available in HD by means of a small red HD logo at the side of the channel name.
The epg is very well laid out and makes Sky's epg look very outdated (as is to be expected after 10 years). The remote is by no means a design classic, but is fairly well built and does the job intended.
Picture quality on both ITV HD and BBC HD is amazing considering you have no montly outlay after purchasing the box. It is also worth noting that ITV HD is not available on the Sky HD Platform, although some would argue it is not a proper channel as it doesn't have it's own epg listing and is only accessible by pressing the red button on the remote when an onscreen prompt appears. That said, it is a worthy addition when you compare the picture quality of football broadcasts on SD.
I have noted that some people have said the box suffered from poor SD quality but in all honesty I have not had any problems. I can only put this down to the quality of TV that people are using the box with, which in my case is a Samsung LCD.
You can buy the boxes for under the £149.99 RRP if you shop around. In summary if you have an existing Sky dish and want to experience HD broadcasts with no monthly subscription then I'd thoroughly recommend looking at the Foxsat HD.
