A venerable PVR

Advantages: Large memory, twin tuners, easy to use
Disadvantages: Some minor problems still unresolved, noisy

We bought our Humax PVR-9200T not long after moving into our new house in December 2005. We decided on the Humax PVR as it came with a Freeview set up and the facility to record programmes along with a host of other minor functions. For those of you in the dark ages or still on analogue TV, PVR stands for 'Personal Video Recorder' and is essentially a computer type hard drive contained in a TV receiver box. This PVR is a link between my aerial and ...
...I decided to use the Humax for a year before writing a review on it, however I feel that I am now writing about something that is nearly obsolete with the recent push for High Definition TV (HDTV).

We chose the Humax PVR-9200T based a few things. First there was a glowing review of an older Humax PVR on this website followed by some friends tell us about the wonderful Humax that they had just picked up. We happened to be around their ... more

Humax PVR9200-T Freeview Hard Disk Recorder

Advantages: It's a high capacity twin tuner HDD recorder. What more do you need
Disadvantages: The software is still evolving, and it's a bit too big

There is no doubt that HDR's are already starting to revolutionise the way people watch television, and this one does the business nicely. The main benefit is that you can "Time shift" your TV viewing, just like recording a programme to VCR for later. How does this HDR differ from using a VCR you ask? Well here are the main points:- * In-built freeview decoder, which means that subject to reception, you can receive all of the freeview channels. ...
...all you have to pay is your TV licence. (Note that this box is freeview only, if you don't get a freeview signal, this box will NOT record the 5 traditional analogue TV signals) * You don't have to swap tapes around, or worry about capacity, simply select the programme you want and it is recorded to the disk (as long as you remain within the huge 160 GB limit, which equates to about 100 hours of TV; some channels have a higher rate of GB/hour than ...

Humax: Making the Unmissable Unmissable

Advantages: Never miss a programme
Disadvantages: U-G-L-Y

...glad I did! The Humax 9200T is a basically a freeview player that has a built in hard drive. For anyone that has ever heard or used Sky + then this is exactly the same thing. Firstly if you were to look at the box itself then it is certainly something you will easily forget. It is a big square box essentially! It is not overly attractive at all. On the front you will see numerous buttons which let you change channel as well as pause live TV. There ...
...which shows the time and what channel you are watching. To the right of the machine is a flap which houses the card reader (for Top Up TV). On the back are the usual sockets with the noticeable absenteeism of a HDMI socket. The remote control is also very ugly. It is quite big and is one of these remotes where the bottom half slides down to reveal more buttons. The majority of the buttons you will use are on the main bit of the remote but there ...

A brilliant digital TV receiver/recorder.

Advantages: Excellent picture on playback/recordings. Easy to use. Comprehensive list of features
Disadvantages: TV guide takes ages to load. Manual could be slightly better. Plasticky remote.

...via the Over-the-Air downloads which Humax broadcast from time to time. Picture quality is indeed excellent, with no interference, vivid colours and high contrast. The receiver itself makes recordings which are every bit as perfect as the broadcast signal. You can pause and rewind the live broadcast if the telephone rings, and you can also watch a recording as its taking place. With the twin-tuner, you can watch one channel and record another, or ...
...guide is straightforward and easy to understand. It is easy to select the programme you need to record and 'book' it to record by pressing OK on the remote. To play a recording back, just select it from the recorded list. However the TV guide takes AGES to load once you turn the receiver on. Finally a USB port on the front panel enables transfers of recordings from the machine to your PC. This requires a fair amount of prior knowledge as the supplied ...

So good you would think it would cost more.

Advantages: Huge hard drive, One touch recording and excellent picture quality.
Disadvantages: It can't walk the dog (yet)!!!

...you have arrived. The Humax 9200 is one of the best Freeview PVR's on the market and in my opinion is the best one. Scanning the Internet looking for a decent one is no easy task, forget the cheaper ones that claim to offer all of the features you need because they probably won't. By paying that little bit extra certainly gives you a whole lot more. This PVR comes with so many features you would actually think that it was more expensive. This PVR ...
...now, no more! The Humax 9200 has the nicest looking menu system and simplicity is king with this machine. It has the easiest to learn and use system ever and you can probably be up and running using it in about 10 minutes. The recorded playback is amazing. The quality of the picture and sound is undistinguishable from the original live broadcast and unlike the old VCR tapes they will not degrade over time. The PVR comes in 2 colours is Silver ...

Great - apart from the setting up...

Advantages: really easy to use, record two things at once
Disadvantages: setting it up took ages

Our old VCR broke ages ago, and we never bothered replacing it, as we could watch DVDs on the playstation, and there never seemed to be anything on worth watching! However, we decided it was about time we replaced the old VCR, and this seemed the best option. Once we'd managed to get it all tuned in and working, it was great, but getting there was a bit of a hassle. Firstly not all channels would work (in particular ITV channels didn't work). Then ...
...past and it would all be messed up again (and a lot of lorries drive past our house!). After a few software upgrades, a bit of aerial fiddling, and a lot of patience, it does now work perfectly, all channels. Now it does work, it's very useful, you can record two things at once, or record on one channel and watch another, which is great when there are people in the household with different tastes! The TV guide is also really easy to use, and you ...

You just can't be dissapointed! its great!

Advantages: 24" widescreen for PEANUTS
Disadvantages: none

supplied with, without spending out on the built-in digital tuner (i recomend the Humax PVR-9200T dual tuner 160Gb hard drive at around £200) Freeview is not yet HD and looks to be 5 years down the line when the analogue signal is switched off, freeing up the bandwidth's neccesary for HD broadcasts. obviously there are the free sky tv and cable tv (BT looks to be launching something soon - check there website) Remember this though - most Tv programs are not filmed in HD quality - look how long it took for the widescreen format to take hold! not all programs shown are widescreen yet, and F1 racing is still an example of this. You may however want HD for gaming, i'm still waiting for something other than the X-box 360. LCD Tv's (a lot of new stuff coming soon) I've spent ages looking for an LCD TV that i like, i'm too fussy as they ...

Never Miss your Favourite Programs Again!

Advantages: Reliable, Twin Tuners, Lots of functions, Good remote
Disadvantages: Can crash, editing function a bit basic, Transferring programmes to PC doesn't work very well

INTRO I had previously been using my PC's TV card to watch and record Freeview programmes but in order to schedule recordings, I had to leave my PC on all the time, which I don't like doing. To combat this, I decided to get the Humax 9200TB Freeview PVR (Personal Video Recorder). This is sort of the Freeview equivalent of a Sky+ box, letting you record programmes to a HDD (Hard Disk Drive), like you would find in a computer so there's no more need for video cassettes or even DVD-Rs. Mine has 160GB of hard drive space which gives me 100 hours of video with this device. There are other Freeview PVRs with larger capacities but I thought that this was sufficient for me as I would delete items that I've watched. One requirement for me was for the box to be able to tune into more than one channel so that I can watch one channel whilst ...
