Join the Lego craze

Advantages: Full of fun stuff for Lego fanatics
Disadvantages: Only issued once every 3 months

...my kids not only love Lego but they love magazines and so to find a combination of the two was a bonus. I logged on to the Lego web site out of curiosity one day just to browse around and saw that you could sign up to receive free Lego magazines. This entails a free magazine sent to you every 3 months that is filled from cover to cover with everything “Lego” and the bonus being that you’re not limited to ‘one’ per household so if, like me you have ...
...click on the link ‘free Lego magazine’, select your country and download a form to fill out and post or you can call the relevant telephone number, couldn’t be easier! This free subscription is offered for 2 years. You can also sign up to the Lego club via the home page by clinking on the ‘club’ link. I have yet to do this for my children and so will return at a later date to fill you in on the benefits offered here. THE MAGAZINE Having ...

Who watches the watchers?

Advantages: Satirical, funny, a little bit sick
Disadvantages: Not always the truth, but close enough?

Private Eye has been a thorn in the side of many governments, people, and industries over the years. The magazine (£1.30 per issue) dishes the dirt that those in power would rather you didn't know. Anyone and anything is fair game. The magazine is packed with cartoons, humourous true stories, satirical fiction, gossip of the great and mighty, and exposees of things that are going on in the world around us. They campaign, they expose, they hound, ...
...that is sometimes the point. Private Eye wants to generate a reaction. The best reaction they think is for someone to be so offended as to cancel their subscription. They want to challenge you as well as inform you. The 'news' items are usually short paragraphs, though there are longer page sized features. Plenty of variety, plenty of different stories, plenty of different people, so things don't get bogged down on one long story. The first possible ...

THE SIMPSONS GO GLOSSY

Advantages: good comics and other features
Disadvantages: Radioactive Man (yawn!) and features gradually decreasing

If you're reading this and you've never even heard of The Simpsons ~ then I simply do not believe you. You cannot possibly have not heard of the most popular cartoon family ~ Sky One give us about three or more episodes a day, it's on BBC 2 on weekday evenings, and there's tonnes of merchandise! And yet, so many fans out there have not heard of Simpsons Comics. They bring all of the humour and laughs from the cartoon into this glossy magazine every ...
...~*~ WHAT IS 'SIMPSONS COMICS'? Oh yay, an easy one to start off with! Simpsons Comics is a fifty-page monthly magazine made for the millions of Simpsons fans in the UK. You'll usually find that every month's issue is actually released a few days (sometimes a week before!) before that month actually starts, for some confusing reason. It's widely available across the country (WH Smith's usually has loads, and my local newsagents gets it), and even ...

What, Me Worry...

Advantages: Hilarious, with plenty of "real" content - parody sketches, fake advertisements, special features, and that beloved Fold-In.
Disadvantages: The paper is of a poor quality, but most people are honestly not bothered by that.

...is most closely associated with Mad Magazine. He often graces the cover of this monthly publication, and can be seen on tee shirts and posters all over the country. For the uninitiated among us, Mad is a magazine packed full of parody sketches. The artists and writers make fun of everything from major films and their stars to radio personalities and current events. Nothing is sacred once the satirical hands of the Mad Magazine staff are on it! ...
...this publication dupe you! Mad is just as brilliant and hilarious today as it was in the 60s, when it was at its prime. You will also find ridiculous letters from fans and the editors, pullout posters of all kinds (drug humor being the most prevalent), and a fold-in using the back cover of the mag. When unfolded, the picture looks somewhat normal, and will have a riddle printed at the top. Once you folded it so that the arrows meet with one another, ...

Caffeine Bomb

Advantages: Satirical, funny, good mix of articles
Disadvantages: Hard to find, might be too 'alternative' for some tastes

...this guff? Some. Too Much Coffee Man is an extension of the American comic book creator Shannon Wheeler’s project of the same name. It used to be an infrequent satire on coffee, consumerism and life in general. Now it’s exactly the same, only in magazine form – so articles are rife and advertisements have crept into the mix. Now, finding this little slice of semi-genius is a tricky business – there are usually a few copies ...
...cup on his bonce) and Too Much German White Chocolate Woman With Almonds has an almond on her face. What I really like about the characters is that they’re all an extension of the same mindset. None of them are innocent of not being stupid at times, no one is the leader, and they’re just caught up in the machine like the rest of us. This kind of honest comic book writing draws me in – it’s not about the fancy drawings, but ...
