Hilarious tales of life on the Hebrides
Review of The Hills is Lonely - Lilian Beckwith by
concat
Advantages: Lovely light reading to bring out a smile or two
Disadvantages: None
The Hills is Lonely is one of a set of books by this author and once you've read one you want to get them all. Miss Beckwith is sent to stay on a Hebridian island to convalesce and finds a culture far removed from her suburban life. The characters come to life vividly as does the harsh scenery. Comedy prevails throughout even at funerals you find yourself smiling at the antics of some of the locals. Her landlady Morag takes her on her visits to the ... ...with huge doses of bicarb. The rooms are smoke filled from the peat fires and you can feel your eyes smarting as she talks.
Time means nothing here - asked when the Post office opened she was told that it depended when the postwoman got her milking finished. Miss Beckwith throws her lot in with the locals to join in the milking , cutting peat and fishing out of a small boat. It could sound boring but nothing is straightforward here and simple tasks ...

Please don't try and kiss me- i'll only laugh
Review of The Little Book of Abuse - Jasmine Birtles by
naomiuk
Advantages: there funny
Disadvantages: some people may find them offensive
...other, and we both know the other likes chocolate, so that’s what they get. Oh, apart from one year when I told him what to buy me ( A cute little penguin Christmas tree decoration from accessorize, which I still have hung in my room!)
This year i was greeted with a much smaller package, which consisted of two small books, one of txt shorthand's, and this book of abuse. The front of it shocked me a little. My little brother had got me a bright ... ...the front of it!
After I got over the initial shock I noticed what it said underneath the bright yellow finger! It Said “lots of one liners for the really annoying people in your life”. I grinned to myself. My brother knows me too well. This is going to provide me with ammunition for years to come!
Some of the one liners aren’t that funny, but some of them are really good. I’ll give you some examples:
“I’m not ...

"...and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt"
Review of The Book, the Film, the T-shirt - Matt Beaumont by
Soho_Black
Advantages: Very funny in places
Disadvantages: The title takes ages to say
Having thoroughly enjoyed “E”, the debut novel from Matt Beaumont and been quite amused by the horribly obvious cash-in follow-up that was “The E Before Christmas”, I was delighted to see a new novel from the author.
As much as anything, I’d been impressed by the way “E” and its companion were completely written in E-Mails, with date headers and everything. That originality, combined with the fact that it was also a pretty funny book, made Matt ... ...with his debut novel “e”, the story is set around life at an advertising agency. This time, though, rather than the setting being in the office, they’re at a film studio in Hounslow, in the middle of shooting an advertisement. In an effort to make it as good as they can and increase the agency’s profile, they’ve hired two of the biggest stars of American TV to play a couple. Unfortunately, in between signing to film the advert and coming to film ...

Like.... totally..
Review of Trading Up - Candace Bushnell by
cocoklo
Advantages: Easy to read, Witty
Disadvantages: Far too long for a book on this topic
Much to my surprise, I really enjoyed reading this book. I opened the cover and expected to find a series of shallow (and wholly uninteresting) encounters between people I was likely to deem shallow and wholly uninteresting. Instead, I found the backpage reviewers comment of "Jane Austen with a Martini" to be blindingly appropriate. This book is a good read for anyone who enjoys traditional women's fiction or indeed, the wry humour of Jane Austen ... ...goes far to bridging the gap between the two genres.
It follows the story of the young protagonist, Janey Wilcox, lingerie model through her rise and rise through the ranks of the famous and superficial. Through her marriage to the highly 'appropriate' (and far too nice for her), Selden Rose, her sexual exploits as she uses her explosive good looks to get exactly what she wants and to her eventual (and much applauded) downfall, flat on her pretty, ...
