Where's the jam?
Review of The Ripple Effect - Dominic Holland by
atticusuk
Advantages: entertaining read
Disadvantages: takes a bit of time to get into it
The Ripple Effect takes a very simple idea and manages to spin it out into an amusing and entertaining read. The basic concept is to take one simple action, in this case the absence due to worker error of the jam filling in a jam donut, and tells the story of how the impact of this has on a number of supposedly unconnected lives, changing both careers, fortunes and the health of a number of diverse characters.
The Author
This is Dominic Holland ... ...transferred their skills over to the world of fiction.
The Story
The story is set around the fortunes of Middleton Edwardians Football Club from Cheshire a bankrupt struggling third division side, firmly entrenched at the bottom of the league a relegation from which would see them lose their league status. However there is a greater threat to their existence as following the death of their long term owner the clubs new owners seem intent on letting ...

A Modern-Day Fairytale
Review of Only In America - Dominic Holland by
Pmshack99
Advantages: great storyline, great characters
Disadvantages: the plot is SLIGHTLY unbelievable!
...WANT her job - she only ended up there after her divorce and subsequent nervous breakdown put paid to her promising career as a buyer - all she really wants is to get her most recent script seen and loved by Hollywood. Perhaps, the most recent group of people to check into the hotel, from a film studio, can help?
Unfortunately not. Milly is too timid about her writing to push herself forward, and her cowardly attempts to be noticed go virtually ... ...have been waiting for!
Only one MINOR problem. Willenheim thinks that Mitch supplied him with the script - but Mitch has no idea where the script came from. Of course, he can't tell his boss that. So he embarks on a desperate search for Juliet Millhouse, writer of the script, while he and his team try desperately to cover up their lack of knowledge.
Mitch goes back to London to continue his search and, in the process, becomes more than a little ...

Read it and weep...FOR JOY
Review of The Timewaster Letters - Robin Cooper by
Hypernation
Advantages: Hilarious, varied, cheaply available, even has drawings!
Disadvantages: Too short - but there's a second volume!
...Cooper (real name Robert Popper, the man behind some of Look Around you with Simon Pegg and scripter of Series 3 of Peep Show with Radio 4's Mitchell and Webb) is a man of considerable spare time.
To help pass the hours he writes letters to member organizations, rotary clubs, airlines and other venerable organs with bizzarre, nonsensical requests, or just to waste their time with crazed inventions he has made and wishes to share with a rightly disinterested ... ...[End of Correspondence] stamp when the organization simply no longer responds to his absurd and increasingly mental missives. Some of the most outstanding letters include a noise reducing machine known as the Imsimil Berati-Lahn (this made me cackle for a good hour), a machine that harvests mustard from wasps (Waspard!) and an offer to supply Beef Scarecrows (later corrected to 'Beel'!) to a Gardening Centre. And wait til you see the drawings that ...

Rising Damp.
Written by Eric Chappell.
You will laugh out loud.
Eric Chappell.
~~~~~~~~
Originally working for the gas board, Eric quit his job and took to writing.
His first play was 'The Banana Box'. This was a moderate success and coincidentally starred Leonard Rossiter, Frances de la Tour and Don Warrington.
Points of interest, in the banana box the landlord was actually called Rooksby. Philip was already a tenant with his own flat.
Eric ... ...get away?"
Foxes and environmentalists in the headlights
Review of The World According to Clarkson - Jeremy Clarkson by
atticusuk
Advantages: Funny in places
Disadvantages: Lacks consistency
...aware of Jeremy Clarkson through the excellent TV programme Top Gear, a show that is not just for petrol heads as it is also one of the funniest programmes on TV as well given some of the stunts and challenges they do. In the show he is the arrogant, opinionated alpha male with a hearty dislike of Europe, foxes, anything environmentally friendly and French cars. Oh and political correctness. In addition to his TV work he also writes a newspaper column ... ...Apart from the toilet reading on offer at my sister house this was the first Clarkson book that I have read and I was interested to see if the humour generated on Top Gear could be translated into the written word. The book itself is made up of a series of short, two or three page, rants or observations on a myriad of topics that stretch from the opening page discussion of an additional public holiday to such varied topics as the joys of the circus, ...
