For a low cost family meal out, then the Hungry Horse restaurant chain is the place to look. They are very much a family orientated business, with the comedy horse, and Pony Club they offer for kids.
The restaurant I'll be reviewing is the Bradmore Arms in Wolverhampton.
The Bradmore is very easy to get to by a number of routes. It is by the bus stop for the 513 and 514 services which regularly run from the city centre. Bradmore itself is signposted from some distance away, and the pub is right in the heart of the area.
There is quite a large parking area at the rear of the restaurant, but this can get quite full particularly of a Sunday, when it is almost constantly busy for the majority of the day. Fridays and Saturdays are also busy, but you can normally find a space, should it be only restaurant customers parked on the car park. Sometimes it can be used by non-customers because the Bradmore is opposite a number of shops and services, so people use the pub car park when using other facilities.
There are 2 kid play areas - one inside and one outside. The inside play area is a large space at the back of the pub, with a number of toys for children to play with. This is still undergoing some development as the old children's play area was removed, and there was talk of a ball pit being replaced. The outdoor play area is only small, but consists of a slide and play area in a cornered off area of the beer garden. The upside of the play areas is that obviously, it gives the children something to do whilst the parents are having a drink or if they are waiting for food. One downside, however, is the indoor play area. As it stands, the Bradmore Arms is still a smoking pub, and in order to get to the play area, children need to pass through the main bar area where people may be smoking.
Alternatively, if your children are old enough to go off on their own, and they don't fancy staying on the pub grounds whist adults are having a drink, for example, then there is a park opposite the pub with playing fields for football and cricket and a larger play area for children big and small.
The beer garden has been recently improved in the last 12 months, with the walkways being re-decked, and new tables and seating being placed outside. There are roughly 10 tables, seating around 4-6 people, so there is space for those who fancy relaxing out in the sun.
Upon entering the pub, the first thing you see is the bar. This is handy if all you want is a good drink. The pub then splits into 2 areas - to the left is the main non-smoking restaurant, and then to the right, is a smaller smoking area, with tables for eating. All orders for food and drink are taken at the bar - This is a self serving restaurant. A full on waiting service is not available at this restaurant, however, attempts have been made to push service in this direction.
The main restaurant area is on 2 levels - there is an upper level at the back of this main area, which is one step up in height, and a lower level, which takes up a good size of the restaurant. This is ground level, and is good for disabled access.
There are two sets of toilets depending on which end of the restaurant you are at, so you don't need to worry about being too far from a loo - There's one nearby.
Now to the menus! There are 3 menus. One is a lunchtime menu which runs until 5pm, which offers jacket potatoes, sandwiches and other light meals for a lunchtime. Then there is the main menu, which is broken down into a number of sections: You have your choice of Starters, Steak dishes, Lite Bite meals, Main Meals which are served on a 17 inch plate, along with the steak dishes, then on the reverse is the desserts, and some special offers the restaurant has. There is also a children's menu available, which offers small set meals, or you can make your own meal up from the pic n' mix section. There are a number of children's desserts to choose from as well.
It has to be mentioned, that the Hungry Horse restaurants are the proud owners of the Candymania - one of the greatest chocolate and icecream desserts I've ever had. The current Candymania is made up of 4 scoops of vanilla icecream, 4 scoops of chocolate icecream, maltesers, pieces of Galaxy Ripple, pieces of Galaxy Caramel, chocolate sauce, chocolate brownie and all topped with cream! Divine......... All for £4.49! There is also a children's version, which isnt far off being a similar size, but they make their own up!
One major downfall at the Bradmore Arms, is their waiting time on food. On most days of the week, your meal will be served within the standard 20 minutes. However, on a Friday night, Saturday night and a Sunday, the waiting times can be nearly as much as an hour to an hour and a half - it gets that busy! Staff can easily find out how far away your meal is and how long the chefs reckon it will be before its on your table, but unfortunately, the waiting time continues to creep up even whilst you're at your table.
The quality of the meals vary. Sometimes they can be very very nice, other times, they can be a bit bland. It depends on your personal palatte. One person may describe their steak as 'ok', whereas the same steak may be described as 'beautiful' by a person on the next table. There is a wide choice of meals to choose from, catering for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, so something will grab your fancy, and i'm sure will taste great. You just have to try.
Something that always gets people, is the enormous size of the 17" platters. They really are huge. Sometimes its difficult to fit 4 plates onto a 4 seater table! You have to try and make room. You genuinely have to have an appetite to be able to take on one of these monster sized dishes. Sunday lunches are also served on these sized plates, so you get a decent amount of food for the price you pay. You should measure out 17" on a ruler, so you get an idea of size.........
Bar service is normally very fast, with roughly 3 members of staff to the one bar on busy nights. Anyone waiting at the food till will get priority as they are ordering food, and one member of staff will need to keep a check down that end, but with 2 other members, your drinks should come soon enough.
There are a number of drinks available, including soft drinks, coke, lemonade, J20, fruit juices, water (still and sparkling), a number of lagers - Carling, Fosters, Stella Artois, then there's Guiness, Strongbow, IPA, John Smiths, and a selection of shots. The shots are constantly growing, so to name them would mean a long list, and I cant remember them all! But they have everything you expect in a bar.
They also have a function room available for parties, wedding receptions and birthdays. However, they have strict rules on 18th birthday parties and do not allow them. But there is a second bar available upstairs at the request of the organiser, a DJ and buffet can be provided, unless you wish to provide your own, and the room can hold roughly 80-100 people. You can call or drop in and book with a member of staff, or ask to view it.

...when I first discovered The Hungry Horse restaurant in Yeovil! My first visit to the Hungry Horse was nearly 2 years ago. I was out with 7 other close friends to celebrate a birthday. None of us had been to the Hungry Horse before, but we had heard about it's reputation for very large portions at reasonable prices through the grapevine and decided to see for ourselves what all the fuss was about! The Hungry Horse chain have around 90 pubs all over ... ...time I ate at the Hungry Horse was a Thursday evening. We arrived at around 7pm to find the place was packed. The Bell Inn does not take reservations so you just have to cross your fingers and hope there is a table available on the night. Luckily, although the pub is always very busy we have never had to wait for a table. Even when there were 8 of us the staff were very helpful and kindly found 2 empty tables to push together for us. The Hungry Horse, ...

...have been to this particular Hungry Horse restaurant on Exmouth's seafront now several times. I cannot really much complain about the food as you pay for what you get and also the drinks incl. alcoholic beverages are very cheap and affordable.. The prices are very low, the menu is your average Brits favourites, eg chicken curry, gammon steak, mixed grill, onion rings etc. There is enough choice there on that front but what bothers me is that everything ... ...and was dried out. The Hungry Horse prides themselves with a leaflet informing you of the nutritional value of the food but I doubt that there would be any nutrition left in the food after it has been zapped on high temperature in a microwave oven. The food ordering process at the bar can be a bit time consuming, especially when like today one member of staff is doing the food order and drinks order at the same time. This is usually split in Exmouth ...

Advantages: Large Portions, Cheap Prices, Plenty Of Locations Disadvantages: Service Can Be Slow, Often Incredibly Busy
Hungry Horses are a pub-restaurant chain covering the majority of the UK and run by the popular brewery company, *The Greene King Pub Company*. With such a strong brand behind them, you can be assured of good quality and a nice selection of Green King beers should be on tap as well.

We eat in Hungry Horses regularly and on our last trip (which would be today, actually) the food bill for a table of four adults and two children was just £35.00. This didn't include drinks, starters or desserts but a family meal out including all of the above would hardly ...

~ ~ WHAT IS 'THE HUNGRY HORSE'? ~ ~
The Hungry Horse is a chain of pubs across the country which offer a varied range of pub meals, including 'Big Plate Specials' - where your meal is served on a huge plate - huge servings of course!
They also have 'Lighter Bites' - which is normal sized and healthier meals, and not ... ...- nothing fancy. The Hungry Horse chain is also famous for its huge steak meals, for example - the 20oz megasaurus! -A 20oz prime rump!
Another positive point for The Hungry Horse is that it offers meals suitable for vegetarians, not much, but at least there is some thought for veggies.
Oh! Have I mentoned the desserts? I feel I must! Another thing the Hungry Horse is famous for, is its desserts, they are all scrumptious, but the one that sticks ...

...are regulars at our local Hungry Horse. We find it an enjoyable day out, and the boys can go play in the play area. The food does not let us down either, and each time we are thoroughly pleased with our meals. Advantages: Kids, large roomy buildings, beer gardens, sport room, barbeques in summer Disadvantages: Expensive, noisy, food just ok, service, rampaging small people, Brewster the bloody bear
Brewsters is owned by the Whitbread Group and aims to deliver outlets with an atmosphere aimed at families with children. They currently have over 140 outlets across the country and have plans to expand further. Normally they are situated in built up areas, near main through roads and quite usually next to a Travel Inn motel, this is because Travel Inn is another member of the Whitbread Group. I have two Brewsters near me and I have visited quite regulary for pub lunches, family occasions etc.
Brewsters is very simular to the ever growing band of chain restaurants i.e HungryHorse, Tom Cobleigh etc in that is focuses on the family and welcomes children with open arms (a concept frowned upon until recent times). This is quite evident as soon as you go near one of their restaurants, the outsides have beer gardens with playgrounds ...

Advantages: Lovely huge all you can eay roast! friendly atmosphere Disadvantages: little vegetarian choice, long time to be seated, only one portion of meat, limited menu.
of rude picture jokes. But nothing the kids would understand! t's very quirky in there. Lots of little things to look at. The restaurant can accomodate around 10 poeple maximum. I don't think that you can book a table.
The restaurant is always VERY BUSY. Soemtimes you have to wait 1 hr 45 min for a table. this is a very long time. But if you've got time to spare, you can wait in the bar area, if you can find somewhere to sit or stand! and take advantage of the drinks. The drinks are fairly reasonable but not as cheap as Wherthersppons or the hungryhorse. However they do really nice fresh jucies. Try the apple juice! Very nice! The waiting system consists of them putting your name down on a list and then the staff calling your name out when the table is ready. This system is flawed because it's so busy and sometimes you can't hear your name ...

Right to the soup then;
Its batchelors cup a soup of course a hug in a mug;
This particular variety was tomato and vegetable as I figured the vegetables would fill me up a little as I had this toothache now for over a week and have not been able to eat anything it was nice but lacking on the taste aspects like the old story I suppose low in fat low in taste, but there was something symphetic about it and it wasn't how I remembered it to be.
