Me and my family (me, my mum, and two brothers) are regulars at our local Hungry Horse. We find it an enjoyable day out, and the boys can go play in the play area. The food does not let us down either, and each time we are thoroughly pleased with our meals. I try to vary what I have but I usually opt for the same things- a starter of onion rings or garlic breaded mushrooms, a main course of the cheeseburger with chips and beans, and a dessert of either Sticky Toffee Pudding or if i'm still mega-hungry the "Ultimate Candy Mania".

Now we have been coming here at least twice a month for the past five or six years, so I guess I have become a bit of an expert on the menu and on the wide variety of food that it provides. Hungry Horse really does cater for everybody in the food area, from young 'uns to the oldies who prefer a more traditional meal.
I am going to try and give a short review on as much as I can remember it serves as possible, and if I have tried that particular meal before i'll try give my opinion and what I can remember it was like.

STARTERS.

Soup- this is usually the soup of the day. Which ranges from tomato, lentil, leek and potato too minestrone and vegetable. The soup comes in quite a small portion but it is served with a roll or bread and butter.
Garlic Bread- I often have this, either sharing it with my mum, or if I'm very hungry i'll polish it off myself. The garlic bread usually comes "hot", though occasionally I have found "luke-warm" to be the correct statement. It comes in a long baguette/ciabatta type bread and is usually very garlicky.
Garlic mushrooms- I have also tried this many a times, and usually I enjoy them very much. They are button mushrooms which are served in a very garlicky sauce, and they usually come with a peice of garlic bread.
Onion Rings- Another of my favourite. You usually get about 10-12 battered onion rings. They come with a choice of dips, tomato, BBQ and/or sour cream. You can normally get two dips. I'd recommend sharing these.
Nachos- I have surprisingly never had these before. But i have seen other people being served them and my mum has opted for these on occasion. They are basically tortilla crisps drizzeled in gooey cheese, tomato salsa, and sour cream.

MAINS (there are lots of mains so I am trying to remember as much as possible-bear with me)
Burgers - All the burgers come with chips, onion rings and BBQ Sauce.
Big Cheeseburger- I almost always go for this one. Well mostly anyway. For £4.99 you get a seeded/non-seeded bun(you can choose) filled with a generous beef burger, and topped with luscious melted cheese.
Chicken burger- I have also tried this burger, but only once. And to be honest I was actually quite impressed with it. I got two rolls, each with a battered chicken breast inside and then it had lashings of mayonnaise on top.
Cheese, bacon and mushroom burger- This is a fairly new addition to the burgers. A seeded bun with a beef burger, topped with luscious melted cheese, crispy bacon rashers and mushrooms. Very tempting.

OTHER MAIN MEALS. (all these meals come in regular sizes, or some come in the BIG PLATE offers which is a larger portion of the same meal).

Lasagne- My mum often chooses this one. Usually you get a large portion, but depending on what time you go the portion size may vary. Basically the same as any lasagne, pasta, mince, tomato sauce and 2 cheeses- mozzarella and cheddar. My mum says she thoroughly enjoys this each time and its a lot better than a supermarkets.
Meatballs- These are beef meatballs, in pasta with a tomato sauce. The sauce contains onion peices and mushrooms, and this sort of put me off.
Fish and chips- When my grandma and granddad come with us, my grandma often opts for this one. And i have to say it looks delicious. For £4.49 you get a large peice of battered fish, not too soggy and perfectly crispy. Its served with a portion of chips, and tartar dip (yeuch!).
Gammon Steak- My granddad has had this on more than one occasion and he assures me it was delicious. Basically it is a tender gammon steak, with chips, peas and tomatos, and im sure my granddad was given a pineapple ring aswell.
All Day Breakfast- Never have any of us had this, however I have seen it being served to other people in the restaurant and in my opinion it doesn't look to tasty. You get sausages, eggs, bacon, breaded mushrooms, beans, chips and white and brown bread and butter.
Scampi- I have also had this meal before, and wooow it was huge! I got around 14 or 15 pieces of breaded scampi, it came with chips and peas/beans (i had beans), and it was absolutely delicious.
Gammon and Eggs- This is a huge piece of gammon steak. This is served with chips, peas/beans and two fried eggs. And I'm sure it is served with ringed pineapple. (Again..point?).

Not only do Hungry Horse cater for the older generations they also provide kids meals, which are always a hit with my younger siblings, and there is a great variety of meals from them to choose from. The kids also get a choice of starters aswell as main and dessert.

KIDS STARTERS

Corn on the cob- The supposed healthy option, though my brothers have never asked for this one before. The corn on the cob is served with a scarily large amount of butter, obviously not so healthy?
Tomato soup- Sadly the kids only get one option if they want soup, and that comes in the tomato variety. This doesn't come with bread, so if you want something to dunk in then you'll have to ask.
Garlic bread- Rip off. For 99p you get two triangles of garlic bread, which is more like burnt toast with a slight hint of garlic. The boys have had this before and made it clear to us that they didn't enjoy it.

MAIN MEALS (there are larger meals for larger tums, and smaller meals for smaller tums here. Each meal comes with either chips/mashed potato/new potatoes/jacket potato and baked beans/peas/salad/carrot).

Smaller Meals.
Hot Dog- These are not the most popular in our family i have to admit. You get two hot dog sausages on a bread hotdog roll.
Grilled Chicken breast- Not a favourite again in our family. It is basically a piece of chicken breast and on the menu picture it looks pretty bland and tasteless.
Fish Sticks- These are basically fish fingers, however the coating is breadcrumbs and they are slightly crunchier than the average fish finger.
Beef burger- Two mini burgers, each served on a small bread bun.

Larger Kids Meals.
Pizza- Brothers often opt for this choice. There are two varieties; Cheese and pineapple or Cheese and spicy pepperoni. I have found that the cheese and spicy pepperoni is perhaps the more popular of the two.
Chicken nuggets- An obvious favourite in our family. You get 6 chicken nuggets. They are not the best quality, I have to say and you get more batter than chicken I often find. But without a doubt a very popular choice.
Veggie nuggets- The same idea as the chicken nuggets, only with a vegetable filling instead of chicken. (Funnily enough).
Cottage Pie- Younger siblings have never tried this before, but they have often contemplated it. Its basically mince topped with cheesy , creamy potato mash.
Cheeseburger- Another popular choice if I am correct in thinking. Again, you get two mini burgers, in two little buns, however these ones are topped with melting cheese slices. They do look quite scrumptious, if not a little small.
Spaghetti with meatballs- A classic combination huh? You get pork meatballs, in a bed of spaghetti in tomato sauce. On every occasion I have seen a little kid munching on this, they have always had red tomato sauce splashed down there top. So perhaps not the cleanest choice.
Chicken burger- A small chicken burger (chicken in breadcrumbs/batter), or a grilled chicken breast, served on a floury bun.

KIDS DESSERTS. (kids also get there own dessert menu, on the menu in the restaurant it gives you nutritional information).
Healthy choices-

Fresh fruit- for 50p (i think its 50p) you can get yourself an apple or an orange. Not a very popular choice with the kids, I'm sure.
Jelly- Its either strawberry/raspberry jelly served in a little pot. I am also told by the waitresses that it is sugar free.
Low fat rice pudding- This is a small pot of Ambrosia rice pudding. Served cold, straight from the fridge I think.

NOT-SO-HEALTHY KIDS DESSERTS (These desserts are still on the kids menu, but are deemed not as healthy).
Tub of ice cream- Each child gets a little bowl of ice cream. They get two scoops of either vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. You get chocolate or strawberry sauce drizzeled on top and one of those little teddy bear wafers which the kids always waste.
Brownies and ice cream- The younger siblings often go for this one. For £1.69 they get a square, hot chocolate brownie, and it comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Cadbury Candy Maniac- A firm favourite with the boys. For £3.99 they get to create there own dessert. They get four scoops of vanilla ice cream, four scoops of chocolate ice cream, usually drowned in chocolate sauce and again it is served with a teddy bear wafer (usually not eaten). Then the boys get to "decorate" it using Cadburys sweets, including twirl, time out, Cadburys dairy milk, and milk chocolate buttons. Now you see why it's a favourite!!

DESSERTS ("Adult desserts").

"Smallest Dessert"- For a meek 65p you are given a single scoop of chocolate mousse topped with the smallest amount of ice cream and sprinkled (more like two peices) of flaked chocolate.
Chocolate brownies and ice cream- The same as the kids version, only this time you get 4 square hot chocolate brownies, served hot, with a generous amount of vanilla ice cream, and layered in chocolate sauce. I have had this afew times and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Sticky Toffee Pudding- My mums favourite. Its sticky toffee pudding alright, a rich toffee sponge, drizzeled in toffee sauce, and served with either custard or ice cream. My mum thinks it's best with custard though.
Chocolate sundae- Had this one or two times and it was brilliant. Much better than a Mcdonalds chocolate sundae, thats for definite. In a tall glass you are given, chunks of chocolate brownie, chocolate ice cream, vanilla ice cream, chocolate mousse, and cream. And then like most choco puddings it is drizzeled in a reasonable amount of chocolate sauce. YUM
Knickerbocker Glory- Ahhh what a classic! I have to say this is one of my favourites. Its basically, scoops of strawberry ice cream, scoops of vanilla ice cream, with mixed fruit, cream, strawberry sauce, nuts(optional), toffee sauce, and that damned teddy wafer. It is mouth wateringly good.
Pancakes- Never have i had these at the Hungry Horse before, but my grandma had them when she came with us. Now on the menu it says they are American Pancakes served with a black cherry sauce. However when my grandma had the craving for pancakes she was distraught to relize it was cherry sauce they came with, as she hates cherrys. So she requested they came with toffee sauce, and it was allowed. She was given two large American pancakes, smothered in sweet toffee sauce, and they also came with two scoops of vanilla ice cream.
Apple Crumble- Tradition or what? Tradition apple pie served with vanilla ice cream.
The ultimate candy MANIA- Okey, i lied when i said the KnickerBocker glory was my favourite dessert on the menu. This HAS to be, and i'm sure it's probably the favourite on everybodys list. It is a whopping huge dessert, however i always manage to shovel it down, often leaving me feeling sick. Basically what it is, is soft, hot/cold chocolate brownie pieces, with 3 or four scoops of vanilla ice cream, 3 scoops of chocolate ice cream, chocolate sauce, milkyway magic stars, malteasers, galaxy pieces, chocolate biscuits, cream and a special chocolate "dust". However it does come at a price; £4.99. But for what it is i think its worth it.

SNACKS/LIGHT BITES. (also available at the hungry horse are snacks and light bites, we often have these if we have a while to wait on our meal, or if we are in for lunch instead of dinner).

Soup- You can choose from tomato or chicken soup. The bowl of soup comes with either brown or white bread and a serving of butter.
Sandwiches- There sometimes isn't a very large choice of sandwiches, but on occasion i find my self struggeling to decide which to have. There's usually ham and pickle, chicken salad, cheese or bacon, lettuce and tomato.
Hot sandwiches- Hungry horse also does a selection of hot sandwiches or what i call toasties. You can choose from Tuna (cheese optional), Steak and onion, jumbo fish fingers (this is basically a fish finger sandwich) or cheese and ham.
Wraps- Sometimes indulge in one of these. You can choose from chicken wrap, Duck wrap, beef wrap, and a few more (which i can't remember).

Aswell as sandwiches and wraps you can also buy light meals such as
Chips, Chips n gravy, Chips n cheese, Chips n curry sauce, potato wedges or spicy potato wedges. .
You are also given a choice of jacket potatoes. You can choose from a wide variety of toppings such as cheese, baked beans, bacon, coleslaw, tuna mayo and a few others.

Hope you have enjoyed reading this VERY LONG review of food.
