Hunters of the Dusk is written by Darren Shan, an author widely believed to be the best children's horror writer ever, and one of the best writers for children in any category around at the moment.
The book is part of a series called The Darren Shan saga, in which a teenage boy has his life changed forever when after attending an illegal freak show, he steals an amazing spider, which belongs to a real-life vampire, Mr. Crepsley. When his friend gets bitten by this spider, he is forced to trade the rest of his life so that his friend can continue his, when he agrees to fake his own death, flee from his family and become a half-vampire in order to get the cure for the bite for his friend.
This book, which is the 7th book in the saga, is excellent for a mid-series book, where it is often hard to keep readers engaged. Darren Shan, who has become a Vampire prince, Mr Crepsley and Vancha March, another Vampire prince, are the hunters of the dusk. Their target - the Vampaneze Lord. The Vampaneze are similar to Vampires, but they kill the victims they drink blood from, and for differences in beliefs, Vampires and Vampaneze have long been engaged in a war of attririon. It is six years after Darren was made a Vampire Prince and following a grim prophecy made by Mr Tiny, the vampires know the ascension of the Vampaneze Lord is at hand. Mr Tiny warns the vampires that there will be only three opportunities for the Vampaneze Lord to be vanquished and only three vampires who may succeed: Vancha March, Larten Crepsley...and Darren Shan. Leaving the enclave of Vampire Mountain, Harkat, (a hooded Little Person who is searching for his identity alongside Darren) Darren and Mr Crepsley are shadowed by a creature of the night, do battle with the vampaneze, meet the mysterious Evanna and pay a visit to some old friends at the Cirque Du Freak. But no friend can prevent the bloody trail of bodies -- the Vampaneze Lord may be more than a match for the hunters of the dusk.
This is such a good book because of the engaging writing from Darren Shan. It is one of few books that will keep a teenage reader engaged for hours, eyes glued to the pages. As soon as you have read one book in the Saga of Darren Shan you will want to read the next one straight away, and they just get better and better.
This series, with a film up-and-coming from Warner Bros., is set to be the biggest book and film series since Harry Potter. I would recommend it to any teenager, and any adult who enjoyed the Harry Potter books. A must-have.
